ITV’s Quiz viewers insist Charles Ingram is innocent after watching the former Army major get sentenced in series finale – The Sun

QUIZ viewers are convinced Charles and Diane Ingram were innocent of cheating their way to Who Wants To Be A Millionaire glory after watching tonight's finale.

The former Army major and his wife were found guilty by a Crown Court jury in 2003 of procuring the execution of a valuable security by deception two years after winning one million pounds on the show.

They received an 18 month sentence suspended for two years and eventually had to pay £115,000 in costs.

They have maintained their innocence ever since.

After watching the dramatisation of the infamous episode and the subsequent trial, viewers felt the pair were hard done by.

One wrote on Twitter: "Well if that is how the case went in real life it's a travesty. Charles Ingram, no wonder he is still fighting to clear his name. #Quiz #CoughingMajor."

A second posted: "Charles Ingram 1000% innocent #Quiz.

Another wrote: "‘Coughing’ Major Charles Ingram was innocent. Masses of reasonable doubt. Should never have gone to court. #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire #Quiz @gallantfive @ITV."

There was also hilarity as the trial was adjourned because of a coughing outbreak in the courtroom.

Viewers couldn't believe the moment really happened as Judge Geoffrey Revlin was forced to temporarily suspend the hearing as members of the jury spluttered.

One viewer wrote on Twitter: "LOL was that mass coughing in the courtroom real or fake??! #couldntmakeitup."

Another posted: "TRIAL SUSPENDED BY COUGHING!! that's beautiful (and true) #Quiz."

A third wrote: "coughing fits in the middle of their court case bloody typical #quiz."

The bizarre incident made national headlines the next day and had Charles's defence lawyer Sonia Woodley, played by Helen McCrory, fuming in tonight's show.

Last night viewers blasted Charles's Who Wants To Be A Millionaire cheating plot.

As they watched the ITV drama recount the fraudster's time in the hot seat, many were stunned the disgraced former Army major thought it would work.

Charles relied on coughs from fellow contestant Tecwen Whittock and his wife Diana to bag the one million pound prize.

He was also wildly erratic, flip-flopping between answers as he bought time to hear the right answers.
