Israel Eurovision song lyrics: Eden Alene faces backlash over Set Me Free song

The Eurovision Song Contest will crown the 2021 winner this evening and Israel is one of 10 countries who have made the final. Contestant Eden Alene performed Set Me Free earlier this week and won a coveted spot, but the song title and lyrics have come under scrutiny for being insensitive at such a time when there is ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza.

Eden Alene, born to Ethiopian-Jewish parents will perform Set Me Free again later this evening, with the hope she will be voted the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest winner.

The competition is being held in Rotterdam and upon the announcement she had become a finalist, Eden exclaimed: “I don’t know, I can’t, I’m going to explode because of the excitement.”

“I’m so happy for my country because we deserve it, because we have been through so much and I have been through so much, so I’m so happy.

“I want to thank everyone for supporting us in those sensitive and complicated times for my country.

“I am happy to bring some pride to Israel, and to stand on the world’s largest stage with an Israeli flag – that is in fact the real achievement for me.

“To have Israel on the world map in the most positive way possible and for that I am grateful and proud.

“I will do my utmost best to make you all proud this coming Saturday. I am sending you all big hugs,” she added.

According to the official Eurovision website, the lyrics of Set Me Free are as follows:

Take a look what we’ve become

It’s been so long

Getting you out of my life

I feel so strong

Set me free

Feel my beating heart in perfect

Harmony

Don’t let me down

I’ma I’ma Ah

I’ma I’ma Ah

Feeling like in prison

Looking for the reason

I don’t wanna say goodbye

Feels like no tomorrow

Everywhere that I go

Babe I’m gonna lose my mind

Just another story

Tell me not to worry

And everything will be just fine

Used to be your treasure

Now I’m gone forever

Think I’m going back in time

Set me free

Feel my beating heart in perfect

Harmony

Don’t let me down

I’ma I’ma Ah

I’ma make it on my own

I’ma I’ma Ah

חלאס עם השיגעון

I’ma I’ma Ah

I’ma make it on my own

I’ma I’ma Ah

חלאס עם השיגעון

Life has been so easy

Used to call us cheesy

It was paradise

In my bed so lonely

You’re the one and only

Hell I know I paid my price

Clock is ticking tik tak

Everything is ציק צק

And I don’t know what to do

People tell me honey

יאללה בלאגנים

One day dreams will become true

Set me free

Feel my beating heart in perfect

Harmony

Don’t let me down

Set me free

Feel my beating heart in perfect

Harmony

Don’t let me down

I’ma I’ma Ah

I’ma make it on my own

I’ma I’ma Ah

חלאס עם השיגעון

I’ma I’ma Ah

I’ma make it on my own

I’ma I’ma Ah

חלאס עם השיגעון

I’m so awesome

Come and get some

What are we living for?

I’m your reason

Spicy season

Like we did before

Let me take you higher

Set the place on fire

2021 degrees

Feel my beating heart and set me free

Set me Free

Set me free

Set me free

Set me free

Harmony

Don’t let me down

Just set me free.

There has been backlash on social media with one tweet saying: “The lyrics of set me free by eden alene the song chosen to represent ‘israel’ in #Eurovision song contest is nothing but a joke they completely have no shame.”

“Israel song in Eurovision called as Set Me Free. Lmao they’re so hypocrite #EUROVISION #VisitIsrael,” another wrote.

Someone else mentioned: “Not Israel going through to the finals with a song called “set me free” #Eurovision.”

Very ironic how Israel sings “set me free” #EUROVISION,” a fourth chimed while another said: “Israel really has a song titled set me free at the #EUROVISION while yesterday they were bombing Palestine…”

Another wrote online: “A little ironic with the current  situation in Palestine, Israel gets into the final of #Eurovision   with a song called Set Me Free.”

“Israel’s song at #Eurovision is called SET ME FREE. I wonder if it’s based on the Palestinian wish to be free from the oppression of those who occupy and destroy they’re freedom. Irony at its best,” someone else commented.

As for what is going on in Israel/Gaza, tensions are high between Israel and Palestinians living in East Jerusalem, Gaza and the West Bank.

Gaza is ruled by a Palestinian militant group called Hamas, which has fought Israel many times.

Israel and Egypt tightly control Gaza’s borders to stop weapons getting to Hamas.

According to the BBC, Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank say they’re suffering because of Israeli actions and restrictions. Israel say it is only acting to protect itself from Palestinian violence.

Things have escalated since the start of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan in mid-April 2021, with nightly clashes between police and Palestinians.

The threatened eviction of some Palestinian families in East Jerusalem has also caused rising anger.

The Eurovision Song Contest final airs tonight at 8pm on BBC One.
