The comic, 79, was echoing comments he made nearly a decade ago that also left critics fuming.

Tweeting to his 5.6million followers, he wrote: "Some years ago I opined that London was not really an English city any more[.]

"Since then, virtually all my friends from abroad have confirmed my observation[.]

"So there must be some truth in it… I note also that London was the UK city that voted most strongly to remain in the EU".

Many took to social media to slam his opinion, including fellow comedian Dom Joly and Rick Edwards.

He even elicited a comment from the Mayor of London himself Saddiq Khan who retaliated: "These comments make John Cleese sound like he’s in character as Basil Fawlty.

"Londoners know that our diversity is our greatest strength. We are proudly the English capital, a European city and a global hub.

John Cleese is a 78-year-old actor, comedian and producer.

Born in Somerset in October 1939, John studied at Cambridge where he perfected his skills as an entertainer.
