How Piers Morgan discovered ‘truth’ about drug mule Laura Plummer’s story

Laura Plummer today gave her first live TV interview since being released from Egyptian jail for supposedly smuggling drugs into the country.

The self-confessed drug mule, who was caught with nearly 300 Tramadol tablets in her suitcase when she went to visit husband Omar Caboo in October 2017.

Laura was grilled by Piers Morgan on today’s Good Morning Britain, bursting into tears as he questioned why she’d had so many pills on her when she was arrested.

The 34-year-old former shopworker cried as she documented the horrors of the Egyptian prison, where she claims she saw women tortured by sticks and had to share five toilets with 200 other inmates.

But Piers seemed convinced Laura wasn’t telling the whole story.

Here, expert Judi James analyses how Laura’s body language changed as Piers pinned her down on various points…

Overall, Laura’s body language during her GMB interview suggested she assumed that now she’d returned to the UK she’d find sympathy and even a positive public profile from her ordeal.

She appeared upbeat and slightly amused, smiling and scanning the group at the desk as she told her tale in a way that looked like an assumption of empathy.

She even performed a self-effacing eye-roll at one point, as though to imply a knowing sense of ‘What am I like, eh?’, suggesting she was just being stupid in being too trusting.

She seemed to be enjoying herself up to the point where Piers began to question her more seriously, with an air of disbelief and one hand on his hip to suggest a part state of aggressive arousal.

Laura did engage in some verbal and non-verbal ‘duelling’ with Piers over the word ‘ask’, waving a pointing finger of correction at him as she insisted "I didn’t ask for" the painkillers. Her neck was pulled in, her brows rose and she looked at Piers from the side of her eyes as she made the point emphatically.

But then it was down to her less assertive but very upbeat demeanour, repeating conversations with the words, "Blah blah blah" thrown into the gaps.

Her demeanour changed as Piers began to question her. The smile died from her eyes and her mouth twisted to suggest she might have felt tearful. She pulled her chin in and her features performed a very quick wince.

As Piers made his points she began nodding in agreement and saying, "yeah yeah yeah" before he’d finished each point.
