How Old Are Katie Couric's Daughters and What Do They Do For a Living?

Broadcaster Katie Couric has been in the limelight for decades. From The Today Show to Katie to founding her own media brand, the journalist rarely takes a break. However, in her personal life, she’s focused on being a mom. Who are Katie Couric’s daughters, how old are they, and what do they do for a living?

Katie Couric married Jay Monahan in 1989

Couric began working in journalism in 1979 after graduating from the University of Virginia. She worked at ABC, CNN, and various local affiliate stations during the first decade of her career before joining NBC, where she later took up The Today Show gig that made her famous.

On June 10, 1989, Couric married lawyer John Paul “Jay” Monahan III. He worked at Williams & Connelly law film when they met, while Couric was working in Washington, D.C. Monahan later began working for NBC News as a legal analyst during his wife’s tenure at the network.

Together they had two daughters, Ellie and Carrie

On July 23, 1991, Couric and Monahan welcomed their first child: A daughter, Elinor Tully “Ellie” Monahan. Their second child, Caroline “Carrie” Couric Monahan, came along more than four years later, on January 5, 1996. Just two years later, Jay Monahan died at the age of 42 of colon cancer.

“I hope you would be proud of the way I’ve lived my life & know you’d be proud of your girls who have grown into incredible women,” Couric shared on what would have been their 30th wedding anniversary. “I think you would like John, who knows there is room in my heart for you both,” she added of husband John Molner, who she married in 2014.

Ellie Monahan is a TV writer on the series ‘The Boys’

Couric is very proud of her daughters. Eldest Ellie Monahan, who turns 31 in 2021, graduated from Yale University in 2013, according to Closer Weekly. In the years since, she’s pursued a career in entertainment. She worked as a writer’s assistant for season 3 of the Amazon Prime Video series Mr. Robot, which earned several Emmy nominations.

In 2021, Couric couldn’t help but brag about her daughter’s latest accomplishments. While guest-hosting Jeopardy!, an answer led her straight to it. After Jack Quaid of The Boys was given as an answer, Couric responded, “My daughter writes for that show.” Quaid himself and showrunner Eric Kripke shared the clip and sung Ellie Monahan’s praises on Twitter.

Carrie Monahan works for Reuters

Couric is similarly proud of her youngest child, Carrie Monahan, who’s 25. She ran track as a high school student and later attended Stanford University, graduating in 2018. According to her LinkedIn profile, she works as a Fact Check Producer at Reuters as of February 2020.

After following in her mother’s footsteps and graduating with a Master’s degree in Journalism from Columbia University in 2019, Couric celebrated with a quote and a photo on social media. “Hey Ms. Masters in Journalism. “Freedom of the press is not just important to democracy. It is democracy.” -Walter Cronkite,” she wrote. “Congratulations Carrie! You never cease to amaze me and amuse me.”
