Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer in 1981 but before that, he was romantically linked to a number of other women. Some reports have claimed that he dated 20 women within 10 years. If that was indeed the case, that’s because the heir apparent knew he had to be careful about who he chose to wed.

In a 1969 interview, Charles spoke about that pressure saying, “You’ve got to remember when you marry, in my position, you’re going to marry someone who perhaps one day will become Queen.”

Here are all the ladies the Prince of Wales dated before he found an appropriate bride.

Susan George

Susan George (later Susan Corkindale) was an Arabian horse dealer and actress who starred in the 1971 movie Straw Dogs in which she became a sex symbol due to her topless scene in the film.

Her acting career continued throughout the ’70s and according to royal biographers, she had several intimate dinner dates with Prince Charles before she met her long-time husband, Simon MacCorkindale.

When asked years later about her relationship with Charles, George called the prince “a good man, a special individual.”

The Daily Mail noted that some of George’s other admirers included Jimmy Connors, Rod Stewart, and Jack Jones who she had a five-year relationship with.

Charles most famous lover is the woman he fell for before Diana, the woman responsible for his divorce, and the woman he ended up marrying in 2005.

The prince met his second wife, then-Camilla Shand, through a mutual friend in 1971. She and Charles began dating but in 1973 he left to go overseas with the Royal Navy. It was during that time that Camilla reconnected with her former flame, Andrew Bowles, and those two ended up getting hitched.

When Charles returned he and Camilla began seeing each other again even though she was married and their love affair continued over the years while he was married to Diana.

Sabrina Guinness

In 1979, Charles reportedly had a fling with Sabrina Guinness. The wealthy heiress was rumored to have hooked up with several famous men including Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, and Jack Nicholson.

Her short-lived romance with the royal though reportedly ended after they had an argument on the way to an event at Balmoral Castle.

And of course, there was Princess Diana’s sister, Lady Sarah. She and Charles started their courtship in 1977 but after she spoke to the press about their relationship the two split. The prince then started dating Diana.

While it sounds extremely awkward that her own sister started seeing Charles after they broke up, Sarah actually set the two of them up. “I introduced them,” she once said. “I’m Cupid.”

Sarah later married Neil McCorquodale in 1980. Lady Sarah McCorquodale and her husband have three children together — Emily, George, and Celia.
