Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II have been married for more than 70 years. They met when they were very young and tied the knot in 1947 when Elizabeth was 21. One year later, they welcomed their first son and the heir apparent, Prince Charles. The royal couple had more three children who each went on to have children of their own and some of their kids then had children as well. However, when we think about Prince Philip and how many grandchildren the family patriarch actually has people get stumped.

After naming Prince William, Prince Harry, and Princess Eugenie you may draw a blank about any more grandchildren Philip has. And it’s even more challenging to name his great-grandkids after Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. So we decided to answer the question of exactly how many grandchildren and great-grandchildren the Duke of Edinburgh has.

Prince Philip and the queen have eight grandchildren. Besides William, Harry, and Eugenie they are also grandparents to Eugenie’s older sister, Princess Beatrice. Eugenie and Beatrice are the daughters of Prince Andrew and his ex-wife, Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson, who Philip has a long-standing feud with.

Philp’s daughter, Princess Anne, had two children–Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall. Peter is actually the duke’s oldest grandchild and Zara is his eldest granddaughter. Zara is a skilled equestrian and married to former rugby player Mike Tindall. However, we don’t hear too much about Peter or his sister as they each prefer to stay out of the spotlight as much as possible.

Philip’s youngest son, Prince Edward, also had two children. Edward and Sophie, the Countess of Wessex’s daughter, Lady Louise Windsor, was born in 2003. Louise’s brother James, Viscount Severn, was born in 2007 making him the youngest of Prince Philip and Her Majesty’s grandchildren.

The duke also has seven great-grandchildren and one on the way as Prince Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle, is expecting a baby this spring.

Philip and Elizabeth II’s oldest great-grandchild is Peter Philips and Autumn Kelly’s daughter Savannah Phillips, who was born in 2010. Savannah’s little sister, Isla Phillips, was born two years later. Isla’s middle name is Elizabeth which is believed to be a nod to her great-grandmother.

Philip is also, of course, a great-grandfather to Prince William and Kate Middleton’s three adorable kiddos Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

In addition, Zara Tindall and her husband have two children Mia and Lena Tindall. Mia was born in 2014 and does not have a royal title because only a monarch’s grandchildren through sons automatically receive royal status. The same is true for Lena, who was born in June 2018 and just like Isla Phillips and Princess Charlotte her middle name is also Elizabeth.
