His Dark Materials writer compares lead character Lyra to ‘force of nature’ Greta Thunberg – The Sun
HIS Dark Materials' heroine Lyra Belacqua has been compared to the world's most famous climate change activist, Greta Thunberg.
The comparison was made by writer Jack Thorne, who famously penned Channel 4 dramas National Treasure and Kyri, and has adapted Philip Pullman's trilogy for the BBC.
Speaking at the premiere screening last night, Jack said: “You know, Greta Thunberg, Lyra, there are quite a lot of similarities there. There’s so much from what we’re going through now that can be drawn on from these amazing books.”
The books follow a young girl, Lyra, as she travels through various parallel universes, meeting a host of fantastical creatures including witches and armoured polar bears.
Lyra is played by actress Dafne Keen, who described her character as a "force of nature" at last night's screening.
She added that she hopes "every single girl" who watches the big-budget epic will "not be scared, go out there, be yourself, because if you're a force of nature, which Lyra is, you will make yourself be seen and heard."
Thorne went on to discuss how there are many parallels between what Pullman wrote in his books and what is happening today.
“We just saw today, a protester being removed from the streets without due process of law and it was done quite openly by a group of people who felt they were entitled to do it and they denied another group of people the right to protest,” he said.
“We live in scary times and I think there’s so much in Philip’s book that’s about now and where we’re at now, even more than when he first wrote it.
His Dark Materials is a co-production between the BBC and US cable giant HBO, who made Game of Thrones.
The series stars Luther and The Affair actress Ruth Wilson, as well as Hamilton creator and Mary Poppins Returns actor Lin Manuel Miranda.
