HBO Max: How Much Will the Streaming Service Cost?

Ever since WarnerMedia announced its own streaming service, HBO Max, hopeful subscribers have wondered how much the latest service would cost them every month. Disney+ and Apple TV+ launch in November so subscribers have already locked in their monthly rates or prepaid years in advance. With HBO Max on the horizon in May 2020, they’ve finally announced their cost.

WarnerMedia presented HBO Max to investors at their Burbank studio lot today. The presentation concluded with the monthly price for the service, and prior to that announced the bulk of the programming you’ll get for that price. Here’s how much you’ll pay for HBO Max and what you’ll get for that money.

HBO Max will cost $14.99 per month

At nearly $15 per month, HBO Max will cost almost twice as much as Disney+, and they didn’t announce any bulk discounts for subscribing for a whole year. However, if you already subscribe to HBO or HBO Now, you can just replace that with your new HBO Max subscription.

All your old and new favorites will be on HBO Max

HBO Max will become the exclusive home to hit series Friends and The Big Bang Theory, so that’s already 100s of episodes you already know you like, and thousands more hours of movies. If you’re a fan of Adventure Time, you’ll want to have HBO Max to see four new exclusive specials and two new seasons of The Boondocks. 

Some of the new shows in the works include Tokyo Vice starring Ansel Elgort, Love Life starring Anna Kendrick in her first series, a Gossip Girl reboot, Superhero High produced by Elizabeth Banks and featuring DC heroes as teenagers, the musical Grease: Rydell High, Issa Rae’s next series Rap Sh!t, Mindy Kaling’s College Girls, Hiro Murai’s Station Eleven, Made for Love, Americanah which Danai Gurira adapted and Lupita Nyong’o stars, the Greek goddess drama Circe, new Greg Berlanti DC shows Strange Adventures and a Green Lantern inspired series, and Ridley Scott’s sci-fi Raised by Wolves.

HBO Max will also have original movies like Unpregnant from producer Berlanti, Steven Soderberg’s Let Them All Talk starring Meryl Streep and Lucas Hedges, Melissa McCarthy in Super Intelligence and Gina Rodriguez in Bobbie Sue, plus a two picture deal with Reese Witherspoon’s company Hello Sunshine. All that and stand-up specials presented by Conan O’Brien.

HBO Max has these shows for the kids

HBO Max will have plenty of edgy fare for adults, but they want to be a service for the whole family too. Don’t worry, parents can lock the young ones out of the grown-up content, but HBO Max has plenty they want the kids to watch too.

Youth shows include The Fungies!, Tig N’ Seek, new Looney Tunes Cartoons, Hanna-Barbera cartoon Jellystone, the live-action/animated hybrid from Roger Rabbit director Robert Zemeckis called Tooned Out, the animated Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai and some original Sesame Street shows including the spinoff Mecha Builders.

How it will work 

Like other streaming services, each user will have separate profiles. HBO Max will also offer co-viewing profiles to curate content that parents and children, for example, might watch together without altering their individual profiles. 

While HBO Max will give you access to the entire run of series like Friends or Doctor Who, it will also curate selections of themed episodes to make searching easier. Examples given include all the celebrity cameo episodes of Friends or all the time travel episodes of Doctor Who.

Users will also have access to podcasts, which they can load onto their phone while they’re away from their preferred viewing app, and select future viewing for their queue on the go. WarnerMedia expects to update the service every six to eight weeks to keep up with current viewing trends and technology.
