Great British Bake Off 2020: Paul Hollywood hits out at trolls targeting Laura

Paul Hollywood has slammed trolls targeting Great British Bake Off star Laura, after she made it through to the show’s final.

Tuesday night saw the semi-finals for this year’s series take place and fans were left raging after Hermine was given the boot by judges Paul and Prue Leith.

Hermine had impressed on the show, recently winning star baker for two weeks running, with many viewers claiming she had been ‘robbed’ of her place in the final.

That led to some targeting finalist Laura and taking aim at her online, following Hermine’s controversial exit, and judge Paul isn’t here for it.

Taking to Instagram, Paul, 54, hit out at the ‘sad people’ trolling Laura and branded their behaviour ‘disgusting’, as he insisted the right person had left the show based on their performance in the semi-final’.

His lengthy message read: ‘I’ve heard of some sad people trolling Laura, it’s disgusting behaviour. Those of you who may not be aware how Bake Off works or new to the series may have missed what we have ALWAYS done on Bake Off, judging.’

‘Each week stands on its own!! It never matters what any baker has done in previous weeks,’ Paul insisted. ‘Even if you win 4/5 star bakers and then have a bad week, you will be at risk of going sadly. It’s the rule that has been in place for 11 years!!’

Setting the record on his coveted Hollywood handshakes on the show, Paul added: ‘Also I ONLY give out handshakes in signature not in showstopper or technical, there was one exception three years ago… STOP trolling any of the bakers!!

‘Remember Prue and I can actually smell and eat the bakes… Bring on the final X.’

It comes after Hermine had urged viewers not to be ‘unkind in her name’ as she addressed the backlash Laura has been subjected to.

She shared a message to Instagram that read: ‘Please don’t be unkind in my name. I am all about love and kindness. Honour my time in the GBBO by showing love and kindness. Behind what looks like characters on your tele are real people. Love. Mental health is real!!!’

Highlighting the importance of mental health and the impact trolling can have, Hermine continued: ‘Don’t be the reason why someone ended their life. This is a strong sentence but real! It happens all the time. So let’s talk about it.

‘When our emotions get the best out of us, we can sometimes be unkind. It is important to take a moment to acknowledge your emotions, know that they are there and be aware of what they are just about to make you say or do.’

She signed off: ‘Know that you are in control of your emotions and not the other way round. Choose right over wrong. Take a moment to read through what you have wrote before pressing send.’

Hermine was the latest baker to be sent packing from the tent, after falling victim to a series of disasters during her showstopper in patisserie week that Prue said, by her standards, was a ‘failure’.

Her exit means that Laura, Peter and Dave will now be battling it out in next week’s final to be crowned the winner of Bake Off in 2020.

The Great British Bake Off continues Tuesday on Channel 4 at 8pm.
