Good Morning Britain shock as show is CANCELLED between Christmas and New Year amid Covid fears

ITV bosses have pulled flagship show Good Morning Britain off air between Christmas and New Year amid Covid fears – in an unprecedented move.

Telly chiefs made the call yesterday amid mounting concerns among staff and presenters, who have agreed to gingerly soldier on until the end of this week.

But while the final pre-Christmas shows will go ahead, presenters have been asked to do their own make-up and nobody else will be allowed in the studio.

Shows scheduled for the mid-festive period will now be pulled entirely and replaced with another show, while the edition on Christmas Day has already been pre-recorded.

It is the first time the morning news show has been ditched from the schedules.

A spokeswoman confirmed: “There is a special GMB Christmas Day show which airs from 7-9am.

“GMB was due to be on air from Weds 29th – Fri 31st December 2021 but due to the pandemic and to protect our teams, we have decided to give them an extended break.

“GMB will not broadcast next week, but will be back on air on Tues 4th Jan 2022.”

A TV source added: “This is all but unheard of, to lose a whole week of a flagship show like this.

“It just shows how alarmed everyone is within the network and on the show itself.

“We even aired throughout the height of the pandemic, but lately it is becoming near impossible with staffing shortages and fears about the Christmas period being derailed for everyone.

“Hopefully things will get back to normal early in the New Year – it’s a big blow for the network, and for advertising too.”

Good Morning Britain has been fronted by Susanna Reid, Charlotte Hawkins, Ranvir Singh and a series of guest presenters since Piers Morgan walked out amid a row with weather presenter Alex Beresford.

It remains behind rival BBC Breakfast in the bitter ratings war after taking a dip following Piers’ departure, but is frequently one of the most talked-about shows on screen – generating rafts of headlines and discussions later.

Piers will return to the airwaves next year on a new global TV show, which will appear on a new channel in the UK and on Fox in the US and Sky News in Australia.
