GMB’s Dr Hilary admits to making mistake over child coronavirus advice

Good Morning Britain health expert Dr Hilary Jones issued new urgent coronavirus advice on today's instalment of the ITV breakfast show.

The ITV resident doctor has been helping answer viewers' questions over the few weeks while coronavirus continues to spread across the globe.

Dr Hilary admitted today that he had made some mistakes during a previous show, while thinking on the spot.

He told presenters Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway that he wanted to clarify some points he made on newspaper deliveries and child immunisations.

The GMB doc said: "There's so much info coming through on this new virus.

"We didn’t know anything about just a few weeks ago. Everything is moving so fast.

"Yesterday I was thinking on my feet bombarded with information and I want to clarify a couple of things that were erroneous yesterday."

He continued: "Newspapers are an essential service for people who need to be update on current affairs and news and be entertained.

"Also for public health information right now it's important people have access to information through newspapers."

Dr Hilary made it clear that it was "absolutely safe" to carry on with a paper round as there is social distancing in place.

He added: ""It's possible to deliver those newspapers safely.

"If someone physically picks them up and delivers them to a doorstep or letterbox it's safe."

The TV doctor also went on to clear up any concerns on taking children to get their usual immunisations.

Dr Hilary explained: "The other thing I said is child immunisations are continuing throughout this outbreak as normal.

"Routine child immunisations will be carrying on in a clinic that is safe."

Dr Hilary, who revealed he had tested negative for coronavirus while demonstrating how a test kit works on Thursday's show, also pointed out that social distancing was now being adhered to.

He said: "From what I observe on the street it's much, much better. People are keeping their distance in the shops. Just driving here and back you can see people are behaving much more responsibly now.

"Today after Mr Sunak’s information yesterday on the self-employed – much quieter, less people driving now.

"People knowing they will get their 80% salary, they are staying at home and not taking the risk of going out. Obeying the guidance."
