The series will focus on the Targaryen family, of which Daenerys Targayren (played by Emilia Clarke) descended from.
HBO announced the news on its official Twitter page however, it is yet to be known whether casting has begun.
The tweet read: “#HouseOfTheDragon, a #GameofThrones prequel is coming to @HBO .
“The series is co-created by @GRRMSpeaking and Ryan Condal. Miguel Sapochnik will partner with Condal as showrunner and will direct the pilot and additional episodes. Condal will be writing the series.”
The House of the Dragon is set to be ten episode series and will be set 300 years before the Game of Thrones.
Fans seemed over the moon with this news as they flooded social media with comments.
One fan tweeted: “I woke up to this news, and I’m *very excited! I’m sure I will love the show, there are some great stories to build on in Fire and Blood, and what’s not to love about Targs and dragons? BUT … “
Another wrote: “And the prequel is coming!! Can’t wait..”
A third added: “I’d love to see the doom of Valyria in the #GameofThrones spin-off, House Of Dragons.”
Daenerys was a major character in the main series up until her death in the finale.
Condal will partner with Miguel Sapochnik and share showrunner duties on the new series.
It’s clear fans are psyched about the new prequel but they will have to wait till a date is confirmed when filming will begin and when it can be expected top air.
