The eighth season of HBO’s fantasy epic concluded with one of the most controversial series finales of all time. With many fans left disappointed by Game of Thrones’ final twists, Jon Snow star Kit Harington took to Twitter and revealed he also believed the series should have gone in a different direction.
The Iron Throne, the sixth episode of Game of Thrones’ eighth season, aired on May 19th in 2019 and received wildly varying opinions from fans and critics.
Many viewers were left disappointed by the acclaimed series’ final moments, including Daenerys Targaryen (played by Emilia Clarke) succumbing to madness and burning King’s Landing to the ground.
After her violent ploy for domination in the penultimate episode, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) concluded the saga by killing the Mother of Dragons.
However, many fans were disappointed after the series seemed to be building up to an epic romance between the two potential rulers of Westeros.

Jon and Daenerys did share a number of passionate kisses throughout season eight, though their happy ending was sabotaged during the final battle.
Moreover, Jon Snow had previously been revealed as the secret son of a Targaryen, making Daenerys his aunt.
Although the series hasn’t shied away from incestuous relationships in the past, the latest reveal made it difficult for most fans to root for the partnership affectionately dubbed ‘Jonerys’.
Even so, a recent interview clip featuring Thrones star Kit Harington on @purple_dwagon’s Twitter page revealed the actor also believes the show should have gone down a different route.
Kit asked: “So you’re Jonerys? You’re the ones who think Jon should be with Daenerys?”
The Twitter fan confirmed: “Totally, because that’s the Song of Ice and Fire!” to which Kit replied: “I totally agree with you.”
Before the reveals of season seven, many fans of both the television series and George R. R. Martin’s saga of fantasy novels were convinced ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ referred to Jon Snow and Daenerys.
Jon Snow famously hails from the icy North, while Daenerys commanded fire-breathing dragons, so readers and viewers alike assumed the pair would eventually end up together after the hint in the title.

One fan agreed with the statement, adding they felt stars Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke were amongst the only cast members who truly embodied their characters from the novels.
They explained: “He better. Cause I think he & Em are the ones who actually read the book. Got the essence of Jon & Dany for real.”
Unfortunately, devoted fans of Martin’s fantasy world can attest to Jon Snow’s Targeryen parentage, as this twist was also featured in the books.
However, this hasn’t stopped some fans from speculating the writer has even more twists hidden up his sleeve.

Martin is notorious for taking years to write the next instalments of the ongoing A Song of Ice and Fire series, comprising some of the longest novels in fantasy history.
Sixth book in the series, The Winds of Winter, is hoped to be released in the next two years and is speculated to feature major departures from showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ TV storylines.
If a vocal minority of fans are to be believed, Martin could completely rewrite Game of Thrones history in the upcoming instalments and deliver what ‘Jonerys’ fans have been waiting for.
