Fresh woes for Cheryl as Greatest Dancer loses ratings battle against The Voice
It’s been a tough few months for Cheryl as she has seen her solo music career bomb and her romance with Liam Payne crash and burn.
And now, to add insult to injury, her highly publicised brand new BBC One TV show The Greatest Dancer has been beaten in the ratings by tired returning ITV show The Voice.
Both reality talent shows went head-to-head on Saturday night in a fight for supremacy between BBC One and ITV in the coveted 8pm slot.
And it looks like will.i.am, Tom Jones, Jennifer Hudson and Olly Murs triumphed over Chezza, Matthew Morrison and Oti Mabuse as The Voice pulled in more viewers.
The Greatest Dancer (produced by Simon Cowell’s Syco company) pulled in an average 4.7 million for it’s first ever show according to overnight data – although this does not include those watching on catchup.
The Voice returned for it’s eighth season (and third on ITV after the rival channel poached the show from the BBC back in 2015) at the same time and attracted 5.3 million viewers.
While The Voice did trounce The Greatest Dancer in the live ratings stakes, it was the show’s lowest opening audience ever – down 3,000 on the year before.
However both shows failed to be the most watched thing on TV on Saturday – with that honour going to Michael McIntyre whose Big Show won 6 million viewers.
Cheryl has seen her star power dwindle in the past year as her comeback single Love Made Me Do It flopped – selling just 5,000 copies.
She was dropped from L’Oreal, losing her a lucrative contract with the beauty company – losing her millions.
And her relationship with the father of her baby, Bear, crumbled – with Chezza and Liam announcing their split on social media last July.
According to reports, the news could get worse for Cheryl next weekend – as The BBC fears The Greatest Dancer will shed viewers the longer it stays on air.
“BBC chiefs think episode one is really strong but they are worried there’s not going to be enough drama to keep viewers hooked,” a source told The Sun.
“They were expecting more clashes between the judges, particularly Cheryl and Oti, but that just didn’t happen,” they continued.
“Any opportunity where an argument could have flared up, it just didn’t. Oti seemed to bite her tongue a lot,” they added
