Former 'RHONJ' Star Amber Marchese Apologizes, But Also Defends Husband After His Homophobic Tweets
And, no, she’s not divorcing him over his comments.
Former "Real Housewives of New Jersey" stars Jim and Amber Marchese found themselves back in the news for all the wrong reasons this week, thanks to a stream of hateful tweets Jim posted while defending Kevin Hart. Now, Amber is speaking out about her man.
Jim went on a tirade against the gay community on Sunday, posting comments including, "#lgtbiq is a parents nightmare that destroys families. Ruins holidays like #Christmas #KevinHart we support you!" This was all in response to Hart stepping down from the Oscars after his own homophobic tweets resurfaced online.
Marchese’s tweets went viral, and even Andy Cohen chimed in by saying "Thank gd is right" in response to a fan who was grateful Cohen fired the couple after just one season on Bravo. "Sick," he added, "Pray for his poor kids."
"My husband is the kind of man who wants to stand against injustice. He sees what happened to Kevin Hart as an injustice," Amber said in her first comments on the situation to Us Magazine. "In addition, he sees a cultural moment when people with honest views on topics continually get silenced or villainized. His statements were, I believe, his way of standing up for anyone who has an unpopular opinion that has cost them respect or opportunity. I agree that no one should be silenced, punished, or attacked for their personal beliefs, even when in opposition of our own."
"I understand how hurtful his tweet is to many and I am deeply sorry for any pain that this tweet has caused," she continued. "Everyone deserves to be loved and I believe that you have a Father in heaven who loves you."
During his rant, Jim went on to claim that "No one is born gay it is a lifestyle choice like being vegan," adding that "NO STRAIGHT MALE wants his son to be gay."
Addressing those comments, she claimed her gay friends "have told me that it has been a burden, that life would have been easier if they had been straight." Even though nothing in Jim’s tweets suggest it, Amber said this was the "underlying" message he was trying to convey.
"He wouldn’t want a child to have to carry that burden. The man I know, the man behind the loud and confrontational tweet, would love his child even if he or she was attracted to the same sex," she said.
Just a reminder, these were his tweets:
Amber also promised to "balance his hardness with a bit of softness" and said she wouldn’t be leaving Jim over his comments. She also made a plea to show Jim "nothing but love and understanding" on social media, to prove "how beautiful, kind, patient and loving" the LGBT community really is.
ICYMI: Jim doubled down on his tweets again Friday morning, after someone responded to Amber’s statement by saying, "many young gay people today suffer depression and suicide because of statements like your husband’s."
"They suffer depression and commit suicide because they are allowing prurient sexual disires [sic] to conflict with their biological programing which drives organic life to seek opposite sex and create life. Not because of others tweets #clueless," he wrote in response.
When another one of his critics wrote, "Pretty sure all a parent should want is happy children, irrespective of any other attributes. They are clearly not a real parent," he responded by writing, "Wonder if Hitler’s parents thought that?"
