Ex-Corrie star Sherrie Hewson reveals she needs hearing aids after going deaf

Former Corrie star Sherrie Hewson has revealed that she has been going deaf – and now has to wear hearing aids in both of her ears.

The actress and ex-Loose Women star, 68, revealed that she was warned about the issue five years ago, but she hadn’t followed up on the worries since.

‘It would have been different if it had been my eyes. But there’s a stigma attached to being deaf, isn’t there? Wearing an aid makes you feel like an old person,’ she told Sunday People.

Even with her eight-year-old granddaughter asking why she was ‘yelling’, it wasn’t until a routine eye test that the problem was brought to a professional’s attention.

Thankfully, she’s now got the help that she needs to hear clearly.

She explained: ‘I couldn’t believe the difference. I can hear everything now. I’m only wearing them at home at the moment. I tried them outdoors but the traffic was too loud. It was a shock.

‘What people don’t understand is that, if you’re deaf, it’s not the volume that you miss so much as the clarity.’

‘I must have spent half my life lip-reading without realising it. I was forever accusing the family of mumbling,’ she added.

‘It’s also made me realise how loud I have my telly. And the radio in my car practically blew me away with my hearing aids in.’

The star also praised the advancement of hearing aids, admitting that she’s had hers dyed to match her hair colour so they aren’t as obvious.

Sherrie, who previously appeared on Ten Years Younger, confessed she was worried about what the aids would look like as she ‘doesn’t even take the bins out without mascara and lippy on’.

But now that her hearing is back on the up thanks to the problem being addressed, she’s now encouraging others not to ignore the issue.

‘You can’t restore any hearing you’ve lost but you can slow down the deterioration by wearing your aids whenever possible rather than turning up the volume on everything,’ she said.

‘You’ll damage your ears if you do.’
