Everything We Know About 'Bill And Ted 3' So Far
Bill and Ted were the original ‘80s heavy metal dudes. In Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey, Keanu Reeves (Ted) and Alex Winter (Bill) played wannabe teenage rockers who neglected their grades, but were destined to unite the universe in harmony. When Bill and Ted air guitared, real riffs would play, and their lingo of “Be excellent to each other” and “Party on, dude” became evergreen catch phrases.
The original movie made Keanu Reeves a movie star and Winter transitioned into a successful directing career, but both have agreed to return to their signature roles in original screenwriters’ Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson’s script. It’s been so long in development, Showbiz Cheat Sheet tracked Bill and Ted 3 through early interviews with Reeves and Winter, social media posts from Winter and the filmmakers, and the latest press release sent out in June.
Here is everything we know about Bill and Ted 3 so far.
It has a title
After years of teasing Bill and Ted 3, Reeves told a New York Comic-Con audience the full title of the movie while promoting his movie Replicas. Bill and Ted Face the Music makes sense on a number of levels. First of all, they are musicians. Second of all, they are prophesied to save the universe. Can they face up to that responsibility?
A June 27 press release gives this plot synopsis:
“Yet to fulfill their rock and roll destiny, the now middle-aged best friends set out on a new adventure, when a visitor from the future warns them that only their song can save life as we know it and bring harmony to the universe. Along the way, they will be helped by their daughters, old friends, a new batch of historical figures, and a few music legends.”
The end of ‘Bogus Journey’ is suspect
Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey almost threatened to kill the saviors, literally. De Nomolos (Joss Ackland) sent evil robots from the future to murder Bill and Ted, but they survived Purgatory, Hell, and Heaven to return victorious. The end of Bogus Journey showed Bill and Ted win their first Battle of the Bands and become worldwide rock stars, eventually leaving Earth to bring their message of excellence to the galaxy.
At the Toronto International Film Festival in 2013 promoting Man of Tai Chi, Reeves assured fans that Face the Music hasn’t forgotten the end of Bogus Journey. True, it didn’t seem like it took them another 30 years to fulfill their destiny, but it turns out the end of Bogus Journey might not have been literal, even though it looked like they fulfilled the prophecy. “Did they?” Reeves teased Mandatory. “There’s logic to the approach,” Reeves added with a laugh.
They’ve started filming
After years of talking about Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson’s script and securing Reeves and Winter’s commitments, and facing frustrating delays, Winter arrived on the set June 16. He told Twitter all about the most excellent news.
Being on the set is a relief, as Winter shared Reeves’ anxiety during pre-production. “What I keep telling everyone is I don’t trust a movie as being made, frankly, until, literally, I’m watching it on cable two years after it’s done,” Winter told reporters last summer while promoting his role in Eli Roth’s The History of Horror. “Not even while we’re shooting it. To be fair to Reeves, his point is just anything can go wrong at any point.”
Come June 16 they were a good ways there.
Death and dad are back
After Reeves and Winter, one of the first major casting announcements was William Sadler. Sadler played Death, whom Bill and Ted beat four out of seven in Battleship, Twister, electronic football and other games to win their lives back. Sadler is confirmed to return.
A press release sent out June 27 confirmed Variety’s scoop that Hal Landon Jr. would return as Ted’s father, who threatened to send him to military school in Excellent Adventure. Also returning is Amy Stoch as his wife, Missy. Missy was married to Bill’s dad in Excellent Adventure, but they were divorced and she married Ted’s day by Bogus Journey. Good to know they’ve lasted the decades.

The babes and deacon are totally different
Diane Franklin and Kimberly LaBelle are not returning as The Babes, two princesses Bill and Ted met in medieval times and brought back to become their band. Erinn Hayes and Jayma Mays have been cast as the princesses for Bill and Ted Face the Music. However, there is a precedent for this recasting. Annette Azcuy and Sarah Trigger already played these roles in Bogus Journey.
SNL’s Beck Bennett will play Deacon Logan, Ted’s little brother all grown up. Brazier Bain played young Deacon in Excellent Adventure, his only feature film acting credit.
Rufus will be addressed
The late George Carlin played Bill and Ted’s futuristic mentor. He’s the one who gave them the time traveling phone booth in Excellent Adventure, and he was there to aid them against the De Nomolos in Bogus Journey. Unfortunately, Carlin passed away in 2008, long before Bill and Ted Face the Music was written. There’s no replacing Rufus, so Bill and Ted Face the Music found a respectful way to address his absence.
“Certainly there’s speaking about how do we respectfully and honorably deal with that character and what it is going to be,” Reeves told reporters while promoting the PBS premiere of his documentary Side by Side. “So yeah, definitely.”
Plus some totally excellent new costars
Also joining the cast as new characters are Samara Weaving and Brigette Lundy-Paine. Bill and Ted have daughters! Excellent!
Plus, musician Kid Cudi and Barry’s Anthony Carrigan co-star and Dean Parisot is directing.

There’s only one more year to wait to see Bill and Ted Face the Music in theaters. Reeves and Winter announced in a video message that they have a release date of August 21, 2020. Orion will release the film through United Artists.
