EastEnders viewers convinced TVs are broken because of Ben sound issues
EastEnders viewers watched Ben Mitchell struggling with hearing problems in tonight's show.
Jay Brown grew concerned with his friend's erratic behaviour – and realised Ben could not hear him when he found his hearing aid.
Worried Ben explained that he hit his head when he went overboard but insisted it was only temporary.
Furious Stuart Highway then confronted Ben after discovering that Callum is missing – but he struggled to hear during the powerful scenes.
It was all part of a hard-hitting new storyline showing Ben's perspective, but some viewers convinced their TVs were broken because of his hearing issues.
Taking to Twitter , one viewer said: "There’s something wrong with the sound on my telly"
"Right thats it on off to currys in the morning, the sound on my tv is really iffy when watching @bbceastenders," added another.
A third said: "Trust me everyone…..if you've tuned in just now there's nothing wrong with your TV set!"
"I honestly thought my TV sound was playing up just then! Phew," explained a fourth.
Explaining that he learned to lip read in prison when his hearing aid was stolen, Ben said: "I got good at pretending I could hear. I'll be alright."
But furious Stuart started threatening Ben after discovering that Callum has gone missing – as Phil's son held his ears in agony.
Grabbing Ben, Stuart said: "If anything happens to my brother you’re dead. Can you hear me? I will kill you."
Will Ben find Callum? And will he get help for his hearing problem?
EastEnders is introducing a deaf character called Frankie as part of Ben's hearing loss storyline.
Callum will be put Ben in touch with her as he struggles to come to terms with his additional hearing loss.
Frankie is played by deaf actress Rose Ayling-Ellis – with the storyline bringing a focus on what it means to be deaf in the UK, and the challenges deaf people go through.
The soap's Executive Producer, Jon Sen, said the new storyline will "reflect the experience of the deaf community".
Speaking about the new storyline, Jon said: "It has been a long time ambition of EastEnders to reflect the experience of the deaf community and Ben’s new story was the perfect opportunity to do that.
"We are thrilled to be working with Rose who will play the part of Frankie.”
Actress Rose also addressed the new storyline and joining the BBC soap as Frankie.
She added: "I am so excited to be joining the cast of EastEnders and I am equally proud to be one of the first Deaf actresses to be part of this iconic soap.
