The first round of competitive dances featured the contestants performing a routine music by girl groups, while the second round saw them dancing to songs by boy bands.
Opening the night for the first round were James Van Der Beek and Emma Slater. They danced a Jive to the Pointer Sisters‘ “I’m So Excited”. Judge Len Goodman said he liked “the speed on the underarm turns” in addition to kicks and flicks. Joey, meanwhile, said James made it look easy with Bruno Tonioli thought James danced “very well.” James got 36 out of 40.
Next up were Sean Spicer and Jenna Johnson, who performed an Argentine Tango to “Bills Bills Bills” by Destiny’s Child. Bruno didn’t seem to like the routine, calling it “an Argentine struggle.” Carrie Ann Inaba said she appreciated “how much effort” he put into the competition, but he missed the artistry in his dancing. The judges gave Sean 26 points.
As for Hannah Brown and Alan Bersten, the pair hit the ballroom to dance a Salsa to “No Scrubs” by TLC. Bruno noted that Hannah’s timing went off, though he still dubbed her “a star attraction.” As for Joey, he said that Hannah seemed to have fun during the performance, though he added that the lifts were “a little sloppy.” Hannah earned a 32.
Ally Brooke and Sasha Farber followed it up with a performance of Samba to “Wannabe” by the Spice Girls. Carrie Ann totally loved it and called the routine “amazing” and praised them for the in-sync performance. “I’ll tell you what I want: more of that,” Bruno added. The judges gave Ally a perfect score of 40 points.
Lauren Alaina and Gleb Savchenko did a Quickstep to “Can’t Hurry Love” by the Supreme that night. As for the Boy Band Round, James and Emma performed a Jazz to “Bye Bye Bye” by NSYNC. It was amazing, but Len thought it was too much boy band, not enough dancing “together” with Emma. Bruno agreed, though Joey said it was “awesome.” The judges gave him a 36, bringing his total score of the night to 72 out of 80.
Hannah and Alan followed it up with a performance of Tango to BTS’ (Bangtan Boys) “Boys with Luv”. Joey loved it, claiming that was “the best dance of the night.” Bruno shared the same sentiment as he said that it was “pure” and had “undiluted pleasure” of the dance. The dance earned Hannah a 39, so her total score was 71.
Sean and Jenna, meanwhile, took the stage to dance a Foxtrot to “Story of My Life” by One Direction. Carrie Ann said, “Unfortunately, you lost your step in the middle of it. … You’re doing the best you can.” Meanwhile, Len thought it “flowed, then it splattered.” The judges gave Sean 24 points. With the additional points, his total score was 50.
Performing a Rumba to “I Want it That Way” by the Backstreet Boys were Lauren and Gleb. Carrie Ann raved about Lauren’s growth, adding that she liked the “confidence” and “sensuality.” Len called it “sure-footed,” with Bruno saying that the routine was “smoky” and “smoldering.” Her total score was 70 as the judges gave her a 36 for the performance.
Kel and Witney danced a Viennese Waltz to “I’ll Make Love to You” by Boyz II Men. It was a “really polished performance,” according to Len. Joey added that he did “a great job.” Earning a perfect score for the performance, Kel’s total score for the night.
