One of Bargain Hunt’s best experts, Catherine Southon, has led her teams to victory a numerous amount of times. Catherine started her career in television on Flog It! and worked there for three years before coming a part of the Bargain Hunt team in 2006. Catherine recently opened up about her time on the BBC show and revealed who she thought was her most memorable Bargain Hunt team.

After being on the successful BBC show for 16 years, Catherine revealed: “A husband and wife team! The wife drove the husband [and me] absolutely crazy, we couldn’t find her half of the time!”

Speaking about her favourite part of her job, she said: “All of it, but to uncover a real gem which nobody else has realised is the absolute icing on the cake.

“It’s happened a few times, and when it does, it’s an amazing feeling.”

Catherine revealed a curta calculator has been her best ever find of the show and explained: “I didn’t really know the value of it.

“I spotted it, persuaded the team to buy which they really didn’t want to, then we watched it fly at auction – I can’t remember what it made!”

Bargain Hunt has been a huge success over the many years it has been on TV, and Catherine revealed her thoughts on why she thought it had such an appeal with audiences.

“It’s tricky! I think people like to see the whole story from start to finish – finding an object, learning about it, then selling it at auction.

“I think people like the reality that sometimes things go well at auction, sometimes they don’t. I hope the public also like to learn something from them.”

In a past interview with BBC, Catherine suggested anyone who was interested in antiques should read a lot and also handle antiques, as well as talk with antiques dealers and collectors.

Bargain Hunt is a programme in which two pairs of contestants are challenged to buy antiques from shops or a fair and then sell them in an auction for profit.

It has aired on BBC One since March 13, 2000, and moved to primetime TV in 2004 after the shows climbing success.

Alongside Catherine, there is a whole host of experts, including Ben Cooper, Caroline Hawley, Colin Young, David Harper, and Kate Bliss.

However, the BBC hit had to say goodbye to David Harper after 15 years on the programme after announcing his departure from the show on Twitter in October 2020.

He wrote: “Re: Bargain Hunt. What can I say – huge and grateful thanks everyone for your comments, likes and shares after my post yesterday announcing that I’m leaving @BBCBargainHunt.

“I’m bowled over by your kind words, and they’re so very appreciated. Thanks again.”

His original announcement read: “Bargain Hunt Announcement: After 15 happy years on @BBCBargainHunt, I’ve decided now is the time to move on and hang up my golden gavels (I do have a few, I promise!)

“Thanks for the fun and memories. Cheers and keep watching!”

He revealed to his fans he has some exciting opportunities coming his way and said: “It’s an opportunity for a budding filmmaker.

“I’m filming a pilot for a TV gameshow idea to pitch to commissioners, it’ll be one day in Ripon N. Yorkshire, plus editing & graphics.”

Bargain Hunt is available to watch on weekdays on BBC One.
