Dr Hilary warns that it would be 'foolish' to lift coronavirus lockdown too soon

Dr Hilary has warned Good Morning Britain that it would be ‘foolish’ of the government to lift the coronavirus lockdown too soon.

The medical expert appeared alongside Ben Shephard and Charlotte Hawkins on the ITV daytime programme, where he once again filled viewers in on the latest information on the COVID-19 pandemic.

With reports that the country-wide lockdown could be started to be eased by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in an announcement on Sunday, Dr Hilary warned that it could be ‘too much, too soon.’

‘When it comes to lockdown, it will be interesting to see what will happen on Sunday,’ he said.

‘I think we have to be cautious, we have large numbers of cases still, hundreds of people dying every day.

Dr Hilary continued: ‘It would be foolish to ease lockdown too quickly, too much too soon. I think it will be very gradual.’

Shephard then questioned whether a ‘traffic light’ system in places in different parts and regions of the country could work, and help people who are struggling in lockdown to enable to see other people.

Dr Hilary, however, didn’t seem convinced.

‘I can understand why people would think that, but the virus doesn’t respect geography,’ he revealed.

It’s also been reported that there could be a five-part plan could be implemented to help get the country out of lockdown across several months.

At the time of writing, there have been over 200,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the UK.

As it stands, over 30,000 people have died of the virus, which has also claimed the lives of an estimated 270,000 people worldwide.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
