Doctor Who’s new series to lose three episodes because of Covid pandemic

Doctor Who fans can rejoice as it's been revealed that filming for season 13 has commenced.

Jodie Whittaker and the cast have started a ten-month filming period with the latest instalment set to air in late 2021.

Sadly, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and restrictions put in place in a bid to contain the killer virus – three episodes have been axed, meaning just eight will be broadcasted.

Season 13 will be Huddersfield-born Jodie's third outing as the Doctor after she became the first female to play the role since it burst onto screens in 1963.

Chris Chibnall, showrunner for Doctor Who said he was "thrilled" that the show is able to go ahead, despite the restrictions in place.

"In this strangest of years, the Doctor Who production team have worked wonders to get the show back into production," he told the Mirror.

"Given the complexity of making Doctor Who, and with new and rigorous Covid working protocols,

"It's going to take us a little longer to film each episode, meaning we expect to end up with eight episodes, rather than the usual eleven," he explained.

He went on to say: "But rest assured, the ambition, humour, fun and scares you expect from Doctor Who will all still be firmly in place. For everyone around the world, this is a challenging period — but the Doctor never shirks from a challenge."

Before taking the helm of the show, Steven Moffat and Russel T Davies often created 12 episodes per year, plus an additional Christmas special.

As part of the new series, the Christmas special which was filmed in 2019 titled Revolution Of The Daleks will air on New Year's Day, 2021.

The festive episode will be the last appearance for Bradley Walsh as Graham O'Brien and for Tosin Cole as his step-grandson Ryan Sinclair, as they're both waving goodbye.

Season 13 will see Yaz, played by Mandip Gill as Jodie's companion.
