Netflix series Dark had a huge cast of characters with actors playing different versions of the same people across different eras. Some of the characters had up to three stars taking on the same role albeit at different points in their lives. The show also had a sprawling, interwoven family tree which linked the Dopplers, Nielsens, Tiedemanns and Kahnwalds.

Who is Agnes in Dark?

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from all seasons of Dark

One character who fans of Dark are keen to know more about the mysterious Agnes Nielsen (played by Antje Traue).

The character really came into her own in season two when she showed up in Winden with her son Tronte Nielsen (Joshio Marlon).

Agnes revealed she had been married to an abusive husband, who had done bad things to both her and Tronte.

In fact, Tronte revealed the physical abuse he’d suffered at the hands of his father.

She was an enigmatic character who embarked on a lesbian relationship with Doris Tiedemann (Luise Heyer) before disappearing.

Agnes was initially thought to be working for Claudia Tiedemann (Lisa Kreuzer) but it turned out she decided to return to Si Mundus and work for Adam (Dietrich Hollinderbäumer).

She also murdered her brother Noah (Mark Waschke) after he tried to kill Adam but failed to do so as the chain of events wouldn’t allow it to happen.

Agnes ended up leaving Winden but left her son Tronte behind to be raised by the Tiedemanns.

Season three saw the introduction of the Unknown (Jakob Diehl), who was going around killing people and maintaining the knot.

He was revealed to be the Origin of the knot and was the son of Martha Nielsen (Lisa Vicari) and Jonas Kahnwald (Louis Hofmann).

During one of the character’s rare scenes featuring dialogue, the Unknown revealed how he used to be a pastor and also told Doris her husband Egon Tiedemann (Sebastian Hülk) was cheating on him.

The Unknown also encountered Tronte in the forests of Winden and gave him a bracelet which he said belonged to the child’s mother.

He went on to tell Tronte, how he gave the boy his name, suggesting the Unknown was in fact his father.

The character also revealed how he had known Agnes, another suggestion the pair had been together at some point.

But this is all inference as the Unknown and Agnes’ relationship never really plays out onscreen and fans have to fill in the gaps themselves.

The other big Agnes revelation from season three was the identity of her parents and how she fitted into the Dark family tree.

Agnes was the daughter of Bartosz (Paul Lux) and Silja (Lea van Acken), who was born in the early 1900s.

Sadly, her birth resulted in her mother’s death with Bartosz left shaken by Silja’s demise.

Presumably, when the knot was broken by Martha and Jonas, Agnes ceased to exist because she was a product of it all and time travel.

Then again, there’s always a possibility some version of Agnes may have survived in the Origin World.

But this will remain one of the many mysteries of Dark with fans coming up with theories about who managed to live outside of the knot.
