Danny Dyer’s ‘real reason’ why he left EastEnders after ’emotional’ nine years

Danny Dyer has revealed the “real reason” why he quit EastEnders.

The soap legend, 45, who played hardman Mick Carter on the BBC show for nine years between 2013 and 2022, appeared on The One Show, where he shared why he left the soap.

The actor confessed that he bagged a gig to work in sunny Australia, which pushed him to announce his exit.

The One Show host Alex Jones asked Danny: “You left EastEnders a year ago, and now we’re about to see this new drama that you’re in called Heat… what can you tell us about that?”

Danny replied: “I left EastEnders. It was a very emotional thing for me."

He added: “I signed up for this other job. I literally left, packed a bag and flew to Australia. The reason I did it, it was a really good script and everything, but I wanted to work in the sunshine.”

Opening up about the project, things didn’t work out for Danny in Australia as the sunshine went missing.

He added: “And I got to Melbourne, and it rained every single day.”

In Danny’s final EastEnders scenes in December, his character appeared to die on Christmas Day last year after a showdown with his new wife, Janine Butcher, led to tragedy.

After Janine had driven Mick’s ex-wife Linda Carter into the sea, Mick went in to save her but got into some difficulty.

He is now presumed dead and lost at sea while nobody has been found.

Danny also addressed whether Mick could return someday but admitted he found his exit scenes “odd”.

He said: “Anything is possible. Where would he have gone to? He can’t swim. I found it a bit odd.”

On his decision to leave the show after nine years, he added: “One reason I left EastEnders was that I wasn’t around enough.

"You’ve got to try and get in there early with your holiday because otherwise, they give you a holiday in February, and who wants to go on holiday in February?”
