Corrie star reveals what happens next – in aftermath of gender reveal party
Coronation Street viewers have seen a gender reveal party going horribly wrong in Monday (July 31)’s visit to the cobbles.
Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson) planned the party so that both his and Sarah (Tina O’Brien)’s families could celebrate discovering whether their new baby is going to be a girl or a boy.
That question remains unanswered, as Adam discovered prior to the party that he’s not the father of the baby – and when Sarah released the balloon from the box it bore the words ‘It’s Damon’s.’ Cue a lot of very shocked faces and one marriage in tatters.
Tina O’Brien told us the drama in that moment was quite intense to film.
‘It’s a day that was a real mix of emotions because obviously Sarah walks in and she knows about the gender reveal party but she’s got to pretend she doesn’t,’ she explained. ‘There’s all the, kind of, being shocked and surprised. There was a lot going on! My head was frazzled but it was a lot!’
Tina described her character’s emotions in the immediate aftermath of seeing the message on the balloon.
‘Ashamed, devastated, embarrassed, upset, scared,’ she told us. ‘She obviously didn’t know where it had come from, she didn’t know who had planted it or why. There was a lot of confusion and she was feeling very, very sick to her stomach.’
Initially thinking that Damon Hay (Ciaran Griffiths) is behind it, Sarah soon realises that it was Adam’s way of telling her that he knew that she’d been hiding the secret knowledge that Damon is the baby’s father. Sarah finds this out-of-character behaviour from her husband very shocking.
‘He can get cross and angry and stuff but he’s usually very level headed,’ Tina speculated. ‘She wouldn’t have seen this coming from him.’

At the same time, Tina said that Sarah can understand Adam’s reaction.
‘Although what he did was out of character and what he did was very cruel and hateful, there is a bit of me that thinks, as well, well she behaved appallingly.
“Those in glass houses” and all that malarkey. Yes, he behaved inappropriately but so did she. Maybe in a weird way it kind of levels up the bad behaviour. I don’t think it’s affected her love for him. She wants to be with him.’
In the coming episodes Sarah is not going to give up on saving her marriage, but Adam doesn’t make it easy.
‘He’s still very, very hurt,’ Tina told us. ‘Also she’s a nightmare! She is very quick to be defensive. I kind of get that, but there’s a time and place! Reel it in, lady! Obviously it doesn’t go too well. But it’s too soon, there’s too much that’s happened, of course he’s not going to even take on board what she’s got to say.’
As they’re talking, Sarah starts to get cramps and fears she might be about to lose the baby. Tina told us that Sarah is terrified about what could happen.
‘The one thing that she was solid about was that she’d had an early scan, she’d seen this pregnancy and regardless if it was Damon’s or Adam’s she felt that she already loved this little tiny person growing inside her and she desperately wanted to have that baby, it was something that just clicked with her. Regardless of how Adam is behaving she is very scared because she wants this baby.’
Sarah goes to hospital on her own to get checked out. Unable to bring herself to call Adam for support she decides to face whatever’s about to happen by herself. Tina told us that Sarah’s previous experience of going through the death of her baby Billy has made her stronger than she realises. Billy, conceived during a relationship with Todd Grimshaw (played by Bruno Langley at the time), died at only a few days old in a devastatingly sad storyline.
‘I think it’s an important moment for her. She’s quite strong, she’s tougher than probably she gives herself credit for. She’s been through some really bad situations before, she’s lost a baby, Billy, and so she’s willing to tough it out on her own.’
She reckoned that Sarah would blame herself if she lost the baby. ‘Obviously, babies do die for all kinds of reasons, and it may have just been a case of that pregnancy wasn’t viable anyway.
I think she would feel that a lot of it was because of her actions or the stress that maybe that she somehow without realising has created so much stress that it became an unviable pregnancy.’
Whatever the outcome, can Tina see a way back for Adam and Sarah?
‘I really don’t know,’ she sighed.
‘Obviously, it’s never up to me, it’s all down to the writers. I think I think that they probably still love each other and I do believe that. There’s a really nice scene where Adam’s with his granddad and his granddad was trying to sort of explain his time with Deirdre and there was a lot of affairs and lots of ups and downs, but at the end of the day, they were each other’s person.
‘So I’d like to think that Sarah and Adam are each other’s person, but whether or not they can actually be together, I don’t know. Maybe too much has gone on, or maybe they do need to start fresh.’
Coronation Street continues Wednesday August 1 at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
