Corrie star gets huge backlash for foul mouthed defence of Cummings

Coronation Street star Simon Gregson has attracted a huge backlash on Twitter after branding those criticising government adviser Dominic Cummings for travelling 260 miles during lockdown.

Simon, best known for playing Steve McDonald in the soap, launched a sweary attack on those condemning the Prime Minister’s chief adviser as he made a lengthy statement to justify making the journey, which many felt broke lockdown rules.

As Cummings explained that he felt the travel was necessary and harboured ‘no regrets’ about driving his son and wife, who were displaying symptoms of COVID-19, to Durham, his refusal to apologise left to a lot of upset responses on Twitter.

Many felt that either the rules had been flouted or it had not been made clear that there was scope for personal judgement in situations involving childcare or ill relatives.

Others have lost loved ones during the pandemic without being able to visit and say goodbye and others have been unable to attend ceremonies such as funerals as they have been adhering to the guidance laid out to stay at home, which was at the forefront at the time.

Simon had a very different take and blasted any critics of Cummings with an explosive tweet which read: ‘This discussion gives me the s**ts. Family first ALWAYS. Regardless.

‘People have crawled through s**t , gun fire, climbing over dead friends to be with. Put your bullst away dick Ed’s [heads] coz you’d do the same. Plus back off press 2 Mtrs k**b sucks.’

Many of Simon’s followers were outraged, branding his comments a ‘disgrace’ and others urging him to ‘get a grip’.

One upset follower wrote: ‘I assume you won’t be clapping for the NHS again? Saying it’s okay to travel anywhere with Covid19 symptoms is slapping the NHS in the face.

‘I lost my wonderful brother in law and he was just 10 miles away & I couldn’t see him. HOW DARE YOU INFER I DIDN’T GIVE A S**T ABOUT HIM.’

He later appeared to distance himself from his comments by adding: ‘Ok I take it back to understand that we could all ways do that.

‘So I hold my hands up and say. BD choice of words. But. Wouldn’t you? Fine line people. Let’s not be told but imagine.’

He has since deleted all tweets relating to the matter. Metro.co.uk has contacted representatives for comment.
