Coronation Street's new star Tony Maudsley once slammed 'inauthentic' soap in furious Twitter rant

CORONATION Street's newest star Tony Maudsley once slammed the soap for being "inauthentic" in a furious Twitter rant.

It was revealed back in April how the former Benidorm star, 52, had landed a role on the soap playing George Shuttleworth.

But ahead of the actor's debut on the cobbles tomorrow night, it's been unearthed that he once hit out at Coronation Street after a Costa Coffee opened up in Weatherfield.

It was back in 2018 when Tony spotted a branch of the popular chain in the background and took to Twitter to vent his frustration.

In a series of now deleted tweets he wrote: “Why the f*** is there a Costa Coffee in a back cobbled street in Weatherfield?? I’m not happy!! ROYS ROLLS…yes absolutely! COSTA COFFEE…not in a month of Sundays!! Product placement gone mad!”

However, one of Tony’s followers thought he was being unreasonable and responded: “How do you think things get paid for? You might not like it but production etc costs money… get a grip, it’s make believe telly #justsaying.”

The star, who was known for playing Kenneth DuBeke on Benidorm, hit back: “Amazing how they managed for almost 60 years then without using the street as a walking billboard, isn’t it?

“Have you noticed those little moments during the show where the story pauses for 4 minutes and the commercials come on? THEY are what pay for it dear! Just saying!!”

After another person suggested Costa were getting free advertising, Tony replied: “Oh believe me it won’t be free. Costa will be paying dearly for their little spot on the cobbles.

“Just a shame that no one seems to have given a toss about the authenticity of a costly rip off coffee chain in a back street of Manchester.

“[Coronation Street creator] Tony Warren will be turning in his grave!!”

Product placement has been allowed on British television since 2011.

Meanwhile, Tony will arrive on The Street tomorrow night playing George, the son of undertaker Archie.

His character will be taking over his father's business, working closely with Mary Taylor (Patti Clare), as Prestons Petals provides all the ceremonial flowers.

But TV fans will remember him well as flamboyant hairdresser Kenneth in Benidorm – a role that he played for seven years from 2011.

His career started when he landed a role in the film, A Life for a Life, in 1998 where he played the part of Stefan Kiszko.

Since then Tony has starred in many TV shows including Doc Martin, Miss Marple and Ordinary Lives.

He has also appeared in many films including Sleepy Hollow where he played Van Ripper and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, playing Grawp, Hagrid's giant brother.
