Coronation Street spoilers: Geoff Metcalfe and Yasmeen’s abuse plot set for deadly twist

Coronation Street fans will rejoice the day Yasmeen Nazir (played by Shelley King) finds the courage to leave Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew). For the past year, the ITV soap has been addressing a coercive control and emotional abuse storyline within a marriage, and those watching at home have seen the Speed Daal restaurateur slowly change from a confident, bubbly woman to a shadow of her former self. But, in the upcoming weeks, there is going to be a big twist.

Over the past 12 months, Geoff has taken more and more control of Yasmeen’s life; from an economic and social perspective as well as how she dresses and what she eats.

According to the latest soap spoilers, Yasmeen’s granddaughter Alya Nazir (Sair Khan) is going to make a last-ditch attempt to try and persuade her grandmother she is being controlled by her husband.

Scenes will show Geoff force Yasmeen to choose between their marriage and her family and sadly, Alya will be thrown out.

But, there will be a turning point, as behind-the-scenes filming images have been leaked showing a couple of Coronation Street residents in a courtroom, which seems to be for Geoff’s impending trial.

Therefore, it is possible the plot is going to climax in the next couple of weeks, but what is going to happen between now and then?

Well, it seems Yasmeen could switch and viewers may see a side to her they have never before.

Speculation has been rife over the outcome of this storyline, and recently, there have been suggestions Geoff’s behaviour will push Yasmeen to the brink of despair as she desperately seeks to escape his control.

But when Yasmeen attempts to execute her plan to leave him for good, it goes horribly wrong and she ends up being arrested and charged for Geoff’s attempted murder.

It seems the court scenes may not be for Geoff being convicted of coercive and domestic control after all, but he could be standing in the dock as the victim with Yasmeen the defendant.

Understandably, fans will be left infuriated by this twist, but it comes a matter of weeks after the soap producer spoke out about the storyline outcome.

Iain MacLeod told RadioTimes.com: “This pattern of behaviour continues until victims have been psychologically imprisoned by the very person who professes to love them.

“The imprisonment is sometimes more literal, with the abuser controlling their partner’s access to money, when they leave the house and who they see – even what and when they eat.

“We will be exploring all these aspects of this complex issue in upcoming episodes, as Geoff’s stranglehold on Yasmeen tightens.

“I hope the storyline will give those who are in an abusive relationship the courage and insight to get out before it’s too late,” he added.

The fact Iain says he hopes this storyline will provide courage for those in a similar situation to Yasmeen to “get out before it’s too late” provides some hope.

While there are going to become darker scenes to come, does this mean, Yasmeen will eventually get out of this abusive marriage alive? But Geoff’s fate has not been discussed.

The actor who plays Geoff has discussed what it is like to play such a sinister character.

During a conversation with The Mirror, Ian said it has been challenging playing someone unpleasant.

“He’s now becoming not just manipulative but mean and nasty and intentionally so. Killing her chicken is a turning point, because he starts to enjoy his cruelty in some twisted, perverse way,” he revealed.

“I’m finding it hard and there are uncomfortable scenes, such as when he pushed his phone into Yasmeen’s face to film her. I have to put Geoff in a box and open it when I need it.”

As for how he gets into character, Ian added: “I indulge my chauvinistic, misogynistic, misanthropic self to play the part.”

And if anything, Ian reminds himself of how important his role is: “If this storyline gives just one viewer the opportunity to recognise they’re in that sort of relationship and do something about it, then we’ve done a good job.

“I love the show and I feel proud that the subject of coercive control has been addressed.”
