Coronation Street spoilers: David Platt relieved as Shona breaks the news her killer son Clayton Hibbs has been refused a prison transfer

Clayton is having a hard time inside after murdering David's then-wife Kylie in 2016, and Shona wanted to have him moved to an open prison for his own safety.

David was initially angry with this, but will be seen to eventually come round to the idea in tonight's episode of the ITV soap.

However, he is relieved when Shona reveals that the most authorities can do is move Clayton to a secure wing – not transfer him to an entirely new prison.

David tells the brunette beauty: "I'm not going to stand in the way if you want Clayton moved, if that's what it takes to keep him alive."

She replies: "It's not possible anyway, they won't move him.

"The best they can do is move him to a protected wing but apparently that's just as bad in its own way."

To which David says: "I just spent all day convincing myself that I would be okay with the idea if he was in an open prison… That I'd be able to support him."

Shona interrupts: "It's okay to be relieved.

"You don't want him to have an easy ride, I get it."

She then thanks David for being so understanding with her son, as the character confessed that he didn't want his late wife's killer dead.

Clayton needed hospital treatment after being left battered and bruised following an attack from his fellow inmates, but is set to try and flee police guards when he is allowed to attend dad Dane's funeral next month.

Earlier this week it was revealed that Dane had died off screen from a drug overdose, and shock images released last month show Clayton making a bid for freedom at the cemetery.

With the help of a group of weapon-wielding friends, Clayton escapes the police's clutches in the dramatic scenes.

Alongside the thugs, Shona will also get caught-up in the brawl and ends up getting arrested, which could spell trouble for her relationship with David.

Last year, Corrie boss Iain MacLeod teased that the pair's romance will be thrown into question once Clayton is back on the scene.
