Coronation Street director dropped for tweets about racism
A freelance director who has been working for Coronation Street – including contributions to the Christmas Day episode – has been dropped after ITV became aware of a number of his tweets relating to racism.
According to HuffPost UK, Steve Finn has made several public comments on social media a including reference to remarks made by TV historian David Olusoga and another in response to an interview given by actor and director Noel Clarke.
He also claimed that he has not seen any racism in the media industry for many years and questioned a Channel 4 documentary called Is Covid Racist?
His comments have come in a year where the spotlight on systemic racism has been shone on TV and in particular soaps after Hollyoaks star Rachel Adedeji revealed incidents she and other actors had experienced on set.
In fact, Coronation Street has just announced a storyline on the very topic of racism ingrained in society which will play out across 2021, focusing on the Bailey family.
A spokesperson for the show commented: ‘We have been made aware of comments on social media by a freelance director, Steve Finn, which are inconsistent with the values of both Coronation Street and ITV. The director will not therefore be returning to Coronation Street.’
He had worked for the show on a freelance basis for two years.
