Coronation Street cast: Who was Joe McIntyre in Coronation Street?
ITV soap Coronation Street has seen Rick Neelan (Greg Wood) back on the Cobbles recently and making life hell for handyman Gary Windass (Mikey North) after falling into debt. Gary has been forced into some uncomfortable situations in order to make back the money, including trying to con an old lady with a dodgy loan and extort benefits from Alex Warner (Liam Bairstow). Rick recently resorted to physical violence in a bid to get the money off Gary and is a sinister presence lurking in the background.
The ruse looks like it could soon be up for Gary after he tried to hide his dealings with Rick.
In one troubling moment last week, Gary told his family to flee after confronting loan shark Rick.
His girlfriend Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) also seemed to suspect something was right with Gary after he lied about what he’d been up to.
On top of that, Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) spotted Gary in a suit in his van and asked him about it, prompting him to lie again.
But what is the connection between loan shark Rick, who is hounding Gary, and Joe McIntyre (Reece Dinsdale)?
Who was Joe McIntyre in Coronation Street?
Joe McIntyre was a Coronation Street character who appeared in the soap between 2008 and 2010.
He was the father of Tina McIntyre (Michelle Keegan) and throughout his time on Corrie, he suffered from debt problems.
Joe’s financial woes got worse and fans soon learnt he’d got himself into debt of £9,000 with Rick on his back.
He tried to get rid of his debts by selling a van but this failed to work and the loan shark continued to pursue him for the money owed.
When his wife Gail Platt (Helen Worth) discovered what had happened, she agreed to help bail him out by selling their home.
However, Joe needed the money quickly and borrowed some off Gail’s father Ted Page (Michael Byrne) to pay Rick.
Joe thought his money problems were over but Rick later turned up demanding £15,000 in interest and threatened to harm Tina if he didn’t cough up the money soon.
As Joe grew more desperate, he formulated a plan to fake his own death to get the life insurance and pay off his debts once and for all.
He was planning to pretend he drowned on Lake Windermere and would sail off on a boat with the money eventually paying out to his wife Gail.
Sadly, the plan went awry at the last moment when a gust of wind capsized Joe’s boat and died in the lake with his wife unable to save him.
Judging from the sad demise of Joe, things aren’t looking good for Gary who faces a similar predicament.
Could Gary try to fake his own death to get rid of the loan shark or will he finally be able to shake Rick another way?
Coronation Streets airs on ITV tonight at 7.30pm & 8.30pm
