Coronation Street becomes most complained about show ahead of Love Island

Coronation Street is the UK's most complained about TV show, coming above ITV2's Love Island.

The ITV soap, which has been on air since 1960, has received a number of complaints over its depictions of drinking, smoking and drug use. With 360 complaints, the soap has more than double the amount of Emmerdale, who sit in second place with 135.

Love Island came in at third after amassing 82 complaints, while The X Factor and This Morning take the next two spots with 35 and 27. The recently closed Rovers Return is a core location for characters, meaning alcohol is regularly featured.

The depiction of smoking has also been included, most notably earlier this year when Brian Packham (Peter Gunn) often puffed on cigarettes with his Italian cousin Isabella (Flaminia Cinque). As well as this, the soap has also explored drugs and the effects of using them.

Reformed drug addict Abbie Webster (Sally Carman) made her first appearance in 2017. During her six years on the Cobbles, she has lived on the street and relapsed on more than one occasion.

In 2021, Abbie fell pregnant but didn't realise until she was six months gone as she was using at the time. Tyrone Dobbs' (Alan Halsall) mum Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney) recently arrived on the Cobbles and her issues with drugs were made apparent.

Her ongoing struggle with substance abuse has seen her purchase them on several occasions and even overdose. Last week, Corrie came under fire with fans after Ofcom received a number of complaints over steamy scenes with Billy Mayhew and Paul Foreman.

The storyline in question saw the duo, played by Daniel Brocklebank and Peter Ash, experiencing issues with their sex life. Paul is suffering from Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and found his illness getting progressively worse, while Billy has been having issues with erectile dysfunction.

But during an episode which aired on November 15, the newlyweds seemed to overcome their issues after enjoying a steamy encounter. While the intimate scene was not shown, the aftermath did get air-time.

In the racy moment, the pair appeared to be semi-naked together under the covers as Paul joked to his husband about never using his muscles. Billy responded: "You weren't saying that 10 minutes ago."

Fans were not happy being exposed to the detail of the couple's romance and took to the watchdog to air their grievances. Ofcom confirmed on November 22 that they'd had 52 complaints about the episode.
