Charlotte Hawkins outraged over ex-head teacher’s comment about girls in sport

Charlotte Hawkins hit out at a former head teacher for his comments about schoolgirls in sport on Good Morning Britain today.

Chris McGovern, who is currently the chairman of right-wing pressure group The Campaign for Real Education, blasted the suggestion that boys and girls play sport together as "absurd and dangerous".

He also claimed that boys are more "marginalised" than girls in primary schools.

However host Charlotte, who is currently covering for Susanna Reid during the Easter holidays, stepped in after he suggested that we "stop feeling sorry for the girls" in primary school.


"If you want to feel sorry for somebody in primary schools, stop feeling sorry for the girls, start feeling sorry for the boys," he said. "The girls outperform the boys in every area of primary school life. It's the boys who are marginalised and who are downtrodden."

Charlotte interjected, asking him whether he was asking from an academic perspective, not a sporting perspective.

"No not a sporting perspective," he said. "The thing about primary schools is that they are dominated by women.

"In many schools you are more likely to see a polar bear walking across the playground than a male teacher. The boys are the ones that are marginalised. So if you want to worry about something at 6.30am…"

"Hang on a second," Charlotte interrupted. "You can't say, 'Let's punish girls' when it comes to a sporting aspect… you have to have fairness in both respects."
