Charlie Brooks sparks fan frenzy as she claims Janine Butcher could return to EastEnders five years after leaving the soap

The 37-year-old actress admitted that she has no plans to go back to Walford at the moment, but refused to rule out a comeback in the future.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain yesterday, host Charlotte Hawkins asked if we should expect to see Janine on our screens any time soon.

Charlie replied: "You know, never say never."

She continued: "I don't have plans to go back."

Presenter Kate Garraway joked that Charlie's 14-year-old daughter, Kiki, could join the soap instead, asking: "If your daughter is 14 isn't it about time she went into EastEnders?"

Charlie replied: "I know!"

The actress' comments sparked a fan frenzy, with many taking to social media to urge the star to return.

One wrote: "That era of EastEnders when Janine and Michael Moon were bobbing about causing trouble was peak television… And yet where was the NTA?? The BAFTA?? The Oscar?"

Another tweeted: "Janine is one of the few remaining characters that isn’t dead that could actually save the show and get it back on track."

A third said: "Janine, you need to get back on EastEnders."

Janine has been a regular character in EastEnders between 1999 and 2014, fleeing the square after murdering Michael Moon in the midst of their bitter custody battle over their daughter, Scarlett.

The villain was found not guilty of murder and left the E20 for France to be reunited with her baby, who was being cared for by her sister Diane.

Evil Janine has previously been at the centre of huge storylines in the show, including the murder of her husband, Barry Evans, her decision to turn to prostitution to fund her drug habit, and accidentally killing Ronnie Mitchell's long-lost daughter Danielle just moments after Ronnie realised who she was.

If Charlie was to return to the soap then she would be the latest in a long line of actors set to reprise their roles this year.

It was previously confirmed that Danielle Harold will be coming back as wild child Lola Pearce, and Rob Kazinsky will be making a brief return as Sean Slater.

Ben Mitchell has also been recast just over a year after he was last seen in the soap, with Max Bowden taking over the role.

Last week, it was speculated that Martin Fowler's niece, Vicki, could also be returning, with actress Scarlett Alice Johnson leaving the show in 2003.

This is not the first time that Charlie has spoken out on a potential Janine comeback, telling Jamie Theakston earlier this month: "I'm lucky because there's great potential with her.

"I quite like to think of her as a hippy on the beach.

"She has the ability to be anyone and go anywhere."
