DAME Helen Mirren is spearheading a new series about one of the world's most iconic female leaders to ever exist – Catherine The Great.

Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming four-part series COMING NEXT WEEK…

When is Catherine The Great's UK release date and what is it about?

The wait for Catherine The Great is almost over as it is set to be released VERY SOON.

That's right, the four part series will be coming to the UK on Sky Atlantic and Now TV on Thursday, October 3, 2019.

And each hour-long episode is due to air at 9pm – perfect timing to sink your teeth in to the new series after dinner.

Perhaps unsurprisingly the show is about the famous Russian Empress Catherine The Great – who having ruled from from 1762 until 1796 was the country's longest-ruling female leader of all time.

Though the monarch lead a long and interesting life, the series will follow only the later years of her reign, paying particular focus to the Empress's passionate love affair with military leader and confidante Grigory Potemkin.

Sky has said that the new series "delves into the politically tumultuous and sexually charged court of the most powerful female monarch in history.

"Catherine wielded supreme power throughout Russia for nearly half of the 18th century.

"Strong-minded, independent, brilliantly intelligent and sexually liberated she was the definition of the modern woman."

It continued: "Amid scandal, intrigue and immense conflict, this is a story of obsessive love.

"Unable to publicly marry and famously promiscuous, they develop a unique and devoted relationship, overcoming their adversaries and together shaping Russia as we know it today."

Who is in the cast of Catherine The Great?

The new four-parter has an all-star cast including national treasure Dame Helen Mirren.

Speaking of taking on the iconic role, the actress said: "I am very excited by the possibility of embodying a woman from history who grabbed and then wielded great power.

"She rewrote the rules of governance by a woman, and succeeded to the extent of having the word Great attached to her name, Catherine the Great."

Also joining Mirren in the cast is:

Jason Clarke

Jason Clarke plays Russian nobleman and Catherine's lover Grigory Potemkin.

The actor has starred in Mudbound, Pet Semetary, The Aftermath and First Man among other things.

Gina McKee

Gina stars as Catherine’s lady-in-waiting and confidante Countess Praskovya Bruce.

The actress has played Mary in the BBC drama Our Friends in the North, which won her three Best Actress awards in 1997 from the BAFTAs, the Royal Television Society and the Broadcasting Press Guild.

She is also known for starring as Anne Sampson in Bodyguard and Jackie Laverty in Line of Duty.

As well as her roles in Notting Hill, Atonement and The Forsyte Saga to name a few.

Rory kinnear

Years and Years actor Rory Kinnear will play statesman and Catherine's mentor Count Nikita Ivanovich Panin.

You may recognise Rory from The Imitation Game and Skyfall.

Richard Roxburgh

Richard Roxburgh plays Grigory Orlov, a noble favourite of Catherine the Great and father to her son Alexei.

You probably recognise Richard from Moulin Rouge or Van Helsing.

Is there a trailer for Catherine The Great?

Yes! There is an official trailer that is just over one minute long.

The dramatic clip gives a glimpse of all the excitement to expect from the four-parter.

And it doesn't downplay the strength and charisma of Russia's longest serving female leader.
