Captain Marvel's Brie Larson breaks down Kree-Skrull War

One of Marvel comics’ oldest, most notorious feuds is coming to the big screen. After 10 years and 20 previous movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain Marvel is the first film depiction of the Kree-Skrull War, the long-raging rivalry between two alien races. Brie Larson’s titular hero finds herself in the middle of that conflict, and EW has an exclusive first look at a behind-the-scenes featurette breaking down who’s fighting who and why.

In one corner of the ring, you’ve got the Kree — who audiences previously met in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Lee Pace’s blue-skinned Ronan the Accuser and Djimon Hounsou’s Korath the Pursuer are both back for Captain Marvel, along with newcomers Jude Law and Gemma Chan. The Kree are devout, dedicated warriors who value the good of their people above the needs of the individual, and Larson’s Carol Danvers — a.k.a. Captain Marvel — has joined their ranks as a member of the elite military team Starforce. (Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have described it before as basically the SEAL Team Six of space.)

And then you’ve got the Skrulls. The pointy-eared, wrinkly-chinned baddies made their debut way back in 1962 as a Fantastic Four villain, and since then, they’ve become one of Marvel’s most established bad guys. They’re made especially dangerous by the fact that they can shape shift and impersonate anyone they choose. (Back in that original Fantastic Four comic, Reed Richards defeated them by hypnotizing them and turning them into cows. It was a whole thing.)

In Captain Marvel, the Skrulls are led by Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, whose search for a mysterious object leads him to Earth.

“We gotta deal with the Kree,” Mendelsohn previously told EW. “The Kree are punks. And the Skrulls, I mean, we’re just misunderstood. At the end of the day, the Skrull is really misunderstood. Look, I don’t want to curse in print or anywhere else, but if I could, I would about the Kree.”

Captain Marvel will hit theaters March 8.
