Call the Midwife actress Laura Main, who has starred in the Sunday evening series since day one, is about to begin a run in the stage production of Steel Magnolias. The role sees her appear alongside a stellar female cast including X Factor star Diana Vickers and former EastEnders actress Lucy Speed.

Laura will play M’Lynn Eatenton, a role which was undertaken by legendary actress Sally Field in the classic tearjerker movie.

However, her fans will have to rush to see her as she is only due to enjoy a short run in the production.

Her commitments to Call The Midwife mean that she is due to be replaced in the role shortly.

However, as of yet, she doesn’t know who will take over from her.

Appearing on James Martin’s Saturday Kitchen to promote the play, she was asked if she would be dipping in and out of the role.

James began by asking: “So, in your part do you have two people playing your part?

“Because you dip in and out of it kind of? So, you’re doing a run of three months…”

“…and then someone else is taking over,” Laura confirmed to the chef.

“But that cast is yet to be announced,” she continued. “I don’t know who’s taking over.

“So I’ll go back to call the Midwife – we start series thirteen.

“Can you believe it? It’s amazing. And it still feels exciting to be a part of it.”

Written by playwright Robert Harling in 1987, Steel Magnolias started life as an off-Broadway production before the film adaptation was made in 1989.

The story is actually based on the true story of his sister, Susan Harling Robinson, who died from diabetic complications.

In the film, Julia Roberts plays the role of Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie, based on his sister, while Sally Field plays her mother.

It’s a classic performance, but Laura also revealed that she hasn’t watched Sally in the movie.

“It’s a bit of a choice, she said. “We had a week off at Christmas and we were halfway through the rehearsal process.”

“We’d focused mainly on the first act, so I said I’d watch up until what we’d rehearsed.

“And to me that was enough. I thought I’m on the right lines, you know.

“I probably will go and watch the whole thing but I also don’t want to be daunted by Sally Field’s incredible performance,” she laughed.

All episodes of Call the Midwife are available to stream on BBC iPlayer. Steel Magnolias is on tour across the UK from March 21st. Got to steelmagnoliasplay.co.uk for ticket information
