Black Mirror was created by Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones as an examination of modern society and the impact of technology on us. The anthology series began on Channel 4 and has since continued on Netflix, following a number of individual stories. One of the most popular episodes featured Breaking Bad actor Jesse Plemons – here’s everything you need to know about that episode.
What episode did Breaking Bad star Jesse Plemons appear in?
Jesse Plemons is currently making headlines after he returned to star in Netflix’s new El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.
He plays Todd Alquist in the new release in a number of flashback scenes with Aaron Paul’s character Jesse Pinkman.
However, fans will also remember the actor for his lead role in one of the most popular Black Mirror episodes.
Plemons played gifted programmer Robert Daly who spends his evenings in his own universe in the episode USS Callister.
Released back in 2017, it was the first outing for season four of the series.
In the episode Daly is the co-founder of a popular multi-player online game.
However, as he grows bitter with his lack of recognition, he builds a simulation within the game that resembles Star Trek.
He then uses DNA from his co-workers in order to create digital clones of them to manipulate in the game.
When he immerses himself in the world he created, he becomes the captain of the star ship and treats his fellow shipmates with contempt.
The episode is one of the most memorable in the back catalogue of Black Mirror for a number of reasons.
Firstly, the outing was one of the longest in the series so far, as well as one of the most expensive.
Writer Brooker spoke about the episode in a special featurette to accompany the show.
He said: “I always wanted to do an episode set in space. For the first time in my life I’d written ‘Interior: space ship’ and there it is.
Plemons added in the same clip: “I think it’s really funny and then in the same scene extremely dark.”
He also spoke in an interview with Deadline about appearing in the series, revealing that after he read the script he binge-watched the first season in one go.
He told the publication: “I started reading it and became really confused because it didn’t seem like the show that everyone explained to me—like, a strange Star Trek mock-up.
“I put the script down for a second and was just going to watch one episode, and ended up watching the entire first season in one sitting, and then the next season the day after—and then went back to the script and was immediately sold.”
Alongside Black Mirror and Breaking Bad, Plemons has also starred in Fargo as Ed Blumquist, as well as films like Game Night and Black Mass.
He is known for playing a number of villains across his career, which is something he admitted he enjoyed about the Black Mirror episode as well to publication.
He added: “Bad guys are always more fun to play, and especially not your straight-up, one-dimensional bad guy.
“I’ve been lucky to have played some really interesting characters that do some really questionable things.”
Black Mirror and Breaking Bad are both available to stream now on Netflix.
