'Big Little Lies' Season 2 Premiere Date, First Pics Released

We couldn’t be happier Big Little Lies Season 2 is headed to HBO this summer, but there’s one thing we’re still unclear on: What is it even about?

The hit show’s sophomore season will debut in June 2019, which means fans didn’t have to wait long for a follow-up. This is especially surprising because Liane Moriarty — author of the book that inspired the series — hadn’t even started writing a sequel when Big Little Lies reached HBO. Still, Moriarty, showrunner/writer David E. Kelley, and series stars Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz, and Laura Dern somehow made it happen.

One revealing new addition is Meryl Streep, who will portray the late Perry Wright’s mother, Mary Louise Wright, in Season 2. The show will likely pick up where we left off and dig even deeper into the events that occurred in Season 1.

As viewers will recall, shortly after Jane (Woodley) moved into Monterey, CA, with her son, Madeleine (Witherspoon) brought her into the small beach town’s circle of moms. Bonnie (Kravitz), Madeleine’s ex-husband’s partner, kept a low profile until it was revealed the father of Jane’s son was actually Celeste’s (Kidman) husband, Perry (Alexander Skarsgård), who raped Jane during a one-night stand. At the season’s climax, Bonnie pushed Perry — who was also abusing Celeste — down a steep set of stairs where he met his well-deserved fate. Meanwhile, Madeleine couldn’t stop cheating on her own husband, Ed (Adam Scott), and the group’s former frenemy, Renata (Dern), was officially accepted into the group.

Together, the moms protected Bonnie and made it look like an accident, but it’s sure to get dicey in Season 2 with his mom poking around.

In addition to Streep, Douglas Smith (The Alienist), Martin Donovan (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), and Denis O’Hare (American Horror Story) will join in for the new season.

It’s also been revealed that, at some point, Madeleine and Mary Louise will have a spat, Bonnie’s parents will show up, and a hot new Monterey resident will make a splash.

After the show got everyone talking and the web exploded, the decision was made to extend the miniseries. This was possible in part thanks to the cast’s passion for working together — not to mention a huge cast-wide pay raise.

“One of the things that’s come out of thinking about the [Time’s Up] movement and some conversations with Reese, who’s really at the forefront, is something we’ve done recently,” explained Casey Bloys, HBO’s president of programming. “We’ve proactively gone through all of our shows — in fact, we just finished our process where we went through and made sure that there were no inappropriate disparities in pay; and where there were, if we found any, we corrected it going forward.”

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Witherspoon and Kidman will earn $1 million per episode in Season 2 compared to the $250,000 to $350,000 they earned per episode in Season 1.
