Kate Garraway joined Good Morning Britain hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid yesterday morning to give an update on her husband Derek Draper’s condition as he slowly recovers from his battle with coronavirus. The 53-year-old added doctors have told her to continue with her life to give children Darcey and Billy some routine. She has since decided to return to her hosting duties on the ITV breakfast show.
Speaking about Kate’s decision this morning, Ben told co-host Ranvir Singh: “It was really great to see Kate – it was in the studio – smiling, talking very honestly about the situation Derek is in.
“He continues to be critical, although he is out of the coma and they can FaceTime, it’s not simple.
“She did have a really, really lovely announcement for all of us.”
After showing a clip of Kate revealing her return to Good Morning Britain, Ben said he was “warming up” to host alongside her.

“Although she did say she wanted me to be rude to her… I’m warming up!” he teased.
“It’s a big step, a really important step as she was talking about yesterday, openly, particularly for her and for Darcey and Billy and Derek’s ongoing condition.
“And I think the other thing that was really key from Kate’s perspective yesterday was that […] there are families who are going through similar things up and down the country and her thoughts and concerns are with them as well.”
Speaking yesterday, Kate explained: “I’ve got to get going, I’ve got to come back.
“I don’t want to make it sound like I’m Mother Teresa or anything, everyone’s having to do that, I’m not special or different, everyone’s having to get on with sadness and loss.
“If I come back we’ll all be in the same boat.”
She added: “Darcey said, do I have to go to bed early just because you’re going to bed early?”
Kate went on to note she knows Derek would not want her to put her life on hold and would want to see her back behind the GMB news desk.

“Derek would not just be saying come back, he’d be saying, why haven’t you done it before?” she remarked.
“As he got into the ambulance he said, ‘Go inside and make them feel safe, because they’re going to be panicking about this.’
“That would be his priority. My job is to make him feel safe and make them feel that they have a future and a world and whatever happens with Derek – we hope and believe he can come back to us – but whatever happens they have to feel they have a world.
“To see me getting on, they’re going to go back to school in September.”
