BBC News: Naga Munchetty wades into Tottenham victory chat but viewers aren’t convinced

BBC Breakfast viewers tuned in to see last night’s Champion League football match result dominate the news this morning.

Sporting fans will know that Tottenham Hotspur beat Ajax 3-2 in an extremely dramatic and tense game, and joining presenters Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty on the red sofa was sports reporter John Watson who brought the latest updates.

But during his commentary, Naga felt the need to impart her opinion about the result, leaving John surprised.

“Our top story, a second incredible night of sporting drama,” Charlie introduced and Naga took over: “I don’t know how football fans can cope!

“First they had Liverpool’s heroics against Barcelona, you’ll remember that. Then Tottenham last night, staged a stunning comeback with a winning goal in the 96th minute to beat Ajax in Holland,” she continued.

Those watching at home then saw a pre-recorded clip play out the night’s events and then they returned to the studio where the three presenters engaged in a discussion over what’s to come for the final.

“Talking to Lord Sugar earlier about peeling yourself off the ceiling, you do feel for those Ajax players having to peel themselves off the floor after that,” John argued.

“And for Tottenham I don’t think they ever dreamed they would have made it through to the final, you know, especially the way that they started the tournament. But yet here they are! That big date, with Liverpool on June the first,” he revealed.

“I don’t feel for the Ajax players at all!” Naga interjected which left John taken aback. He asked: “Do you not?”

“No,” she clarified and he replied: “That’s mean! Surely?”

But Naga hit back and gave her reasoning: “I didn’t feel sorry for the Barcelona players [either]. I wanted two English teams in the final.”

“I mean the elation and then the lows, I mean the contrasting feelings,” the sports journalist tried to explain. “And fair play to Mauricio Pochettino their manager. Huge credit has to go to him for giving them the belief they could do that.”

Those watching the exchange at home took to Twitter to comment on Naga’s opinion.

One said: “Naga pretending to like and understand football. What a total embarrassment #BBCBreakfast.”

Whilst another added: “Hate it when people who didn’t even watch a match can’t shut the f**k up about it! #BBCbreakfast #Naga.”

A third responded sarcastically: “Why bother with a sports presenter when Naga is clearly knowledgable enough to do it herself.”

Whether or not Naga watched the match is unknown, but football fans will be gearing up for the first Saturday in June when an all English occasion in 11 years will play out.

Yesterday on the show, Dan Walker snubbed Sally Nugent.

Viewers saw weather reporter Carol Kirkwood in the studio for the first time in a very long time and Dan made it very clear he favoured the metrologist to his fellow sports correspondent.

BBC Breakfast airs every morning at 6am on BBC One.
