BBC Line of Duty season 6: Will Simon Bannerjee return?

Line of Duty season five came to an end earlier this month and fans still haven’t gotten over the finale. Unfortunately, Line of Duty fans may have to wait a couple of years for the new series. One character who was mentioned in the finale but did not star was P.C Simon Bannerjee (played by Neet Mohan). Does this mean he will star in Line of Duty season six?

Will Simon Banerjee return for Line of Duty season 6?

At the moment, it is unclear if Simon Bannerjee will return for the new series of Line of Duty.

He did not star in the fifth series of Line of Duty but he was mentioned by OCG member Ryan Pilkington (Gregory Piper).

Ryan and Bannerjee met back in season one of Line of Duty when the officer attempted to arrest Ryan on the Borogove Estate.

Ryan had been recruited into the OCG by Tommy Hunter (Brian McCardie) as a young boy.

WILL LISA MCQUEEN RETURN?

Bannerjee had taken on a mentor-like role guiding Ryan and at the end of season one, was seen giving the boy card with his number and said to call him if he wanted to talk.

In the season five finale, a grown-up Ryan was accepted into the police training school, which will only allow the OCG to continue to operate and grow.

In his interview, Ryan said he was inspired to join the police by PC Simon Bannerjee.

He said that during a troubled childhood with an alcoholic and drug-addicted mother, Bannerjee served as a role model to him.

Ryan told the interviewers: “The person who made me see there was another way, to be a useful member of society, was a police officer, PC Simon Bannerjee.

“He’s the reason why I wanted to become a police officer too. To help people.”

As Ryan is still part of the OCG, is it possible Bannerjee has gone rogue and is the fourth Caddy?

In the season five finale, three of the four had been identified, Dot (Craig Parkinson), Derek Hilton (Paul Higgins) and Gill Bigelow (Polly Walker), so who is the fourth H?

On the other hand, it is highly possible Ryan has been playing Banerjee and has pretended to be on the straight and narrow when actually he is one of the masterminds behind a criminal network.

WHO IS SIMON BANNERJEE?

Speaking to Digital Spy, Jed Mercurio explained how Ryan’s arc mirrors the story of Matthew ‘Dot’ Cotton’.

He said: “We were always very careful that he never was connected to any of the crimes by any evidence.

“Even though he is a sociopathic murderer – he killed Corbett and he killed Maneet – he’s not in any way suspected of those offences. And also, he had the mentorship of a police officer, which we saw right at the end of series one.”

Mercurio added: “So we can understand how he now appears to be someone who had put a criminal childhood behind him and gone straight.”

WHO WAS GRAEME LIVINGSTONE?

Who will star in Line of Duty season 6?

Only three cast members have been confirmed for Line of Duty season six.

They are Martin Compston, Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar, who will reprise their roles as

DS Steve Arnott, DI Kate Fleming and Superintendent Ted Hastings respectively.

Show writer, creator and director Jed Mercurio recently revealed on Twitter he had not started writing the script for the new series, so anything could happen and anyone could return.

Rochenda Sandall who plays Lisa McQueen hinted that she might return for the new series.

The star said there was an “open door” for Lisa to return.

Viewers last saw Lisa under witness protection and immunity from prosecution after she gave AC-12 intel on the OCG.

Sandall said: “I also don’t think it’s the end for Lisa. I don’t think that she’ll get off scot-free. If you think about it, nobody who’s gone for immunity, in the whole series, has ever got away with it.”
