BBC host scolds Dodds over ‘monumental’ coronavirus crisis as Labour chief attacks Boris

Anneliese Dodds got into a heated exchange on BBC Breakfast when she was told off for not recognising the “monumental” crisis of the coronavirus pandemic. The Shadow Chancellor and her party have been calling for alterations to the Government’s job retention schemes after it emerged that very few people and businesses had made use of them. The Labour minister tried to use Switzerland as a comparison, but was quickly shut down by BBC journalist Nina Warhurst who corrected her example.

Ms Warhurst told the MP: “The Chancellor has been quite agile, he’s amended these schemes.

“For example, he’s banned banks from asking small firms to provide guarantees.

“The British Chamber of Commerce have praised him, saying the Chancellor is listening and responding.

“Do you accept that this is monumental and that teething problems are inevitable?”

Ms Dodds shot back: “We absolutely do accept that elements of this is unprecedented, and we pushed for many of them.

“If you look at Switzerland, for example, very very large numbers of loans have been dispersed compared with the situation in the UK.

“So there is a blockage there and we need to have the data so we can identify where that hole is.”

The BBC presenter corrected: “In Switzerland, the Government does take on 100 percent of the loans so that’s where the distinction lies.”
