Anne Hegerty takes brutal swipe at The Chase’s rival shows: ‘They didn’t have a chance’

Anne, also known as The Governess, is a familiar face on ITV game show, The Chase, which is hosted by Bradley Walsh. She, among the other Chasers – Mark Labbett, Jenny Ryan, Darragh Ellis, Shaun Wallace and Paul Sinha – have become firm favourites with ITV viewers. Since The Chase first aired in 2009, other rival game shows have launched on TV. However, according to Anne, no other quiz show has pulled in ratings quite like The Chase.
Speaking to Express.co.uk and other press, Anne discussed the future of The Chase and what makes the programme so successful compared to other quiz shows that air at a similar time.
“When the show first started, the idea was that it was going to run six months of the year, and then divided it would run the other six months of the year,” Anne began.
“Divided didn’t last that long because it was very quickly apparent that we were one of those shows that were getting the big ratings.
“There have been so many other shows that have been tried out against us. Shows that were actually quite good in their own right, like Take on the Twisters and Five Minutes to a Fortune that just happened to be in the five o’clock slot.”
She continued: “They really didn’t have a chance against us.”
Anne went on to address why she thought The Chase’s rival shows didn’t work as she pointed out it may have had something to do with the format.
“I don’t know, maybe it’s difficult for the audience to get the hang of the rules,” she added.
“It generally needs to be kept reasonably simple and you just need one big hook that you need to hang it all on.”
“Like you know Tipping Point, you’ve got this enormous machine. On The Chase what makes it different is The Chasers,” Anne explained.
“You basically need to have one massive gimmick, that is the reason why you have this show and not any other show.”
On Thursday, brainiac Anne returned to ITV with her own game show titled Britain’s Biggest Celebrity Family.
The series sees eight celebrity families battling it out against each other in the hope of winning £25,000 for their chosen charity – and winning the title of Britain’s Brightest Celebrity Family.

The famous faces taking part in the upcoming series with their families include Vanessa Feltz, Matthew Wright and Joe Pasquale.
Other names include Antony Cotton, the Ruddock brothers, Olympian Colin Jackson, Craig Charles and Rita Simons.
On Thursday’s episode, the Ruddock brothers went up against Olympian Colin Jackson and his family.
In a tense few rounds, each team had to answer a number of general knowledge questions thrown at them by Anne, as they attempted to make it through to the semi-finals.
Speaking about the celebrity edition of her ITV game show, Anne said she found some of the contestants “highly entertaining”.
“I think everybody on the show, you know, was trying to do their best, everyone’s got different skill sets,” Anne explained.
“I don’t think any of our contestants were thick. Some of them were highly entertaining, and yes some of them were unexpectedly good. The Pasquales, in particular.
“I didn’t actually realise that Joe Pasquale and his family are so talented, so that was a very nice surprise.”
Britain’s Brightest Celebrity Family airs on Thursday at 8.30pm on ITV and The Chase airs daily at 5pm on ITV.
