An 'Empire' Spinoff With Taraji P. Henson Is in the Works

It turns out we haven't seen the last of Cookie Lyon. After Empire's premature series finale aired on April 21, fans have been wanting to know what happens next since the season's filming schedule was shut down due to the pandemic. And thanks to star Taraji P. Henson's first-look deal with 20th Century Fox TV, they may finally get their chance.

The Hollywood Reporter announced the news that Fox and Henson will reunite for an untitled Empire spinoff, and Henson will reprise her fan-favorite role in the potential series. The publication reports that Empire co-creators Lee Daniels and Danny Strong will re-team with Yolanda Lawrence and Stacy Littlejohn to co-write the series and be co-showrunners as well. Empire executive producer Sanaa Hamri will direct, and Henson will serve as an executive producer as well.  

Fox hasn't released official plot details—or who might join Henson on the show—but THR reports the spinoff will take place in Los Angeles, where Cookie will make her new home. It's a fitting location for Henson, who recently launched her production company, TPH Entertainment. When speaking to Glamour last year, Henson said that as a producer and actor, "I just don’t take no for an answer. I just prove myself in film after film, role after role, to the point where I’m undeniable. And now you got to give me my money.”

When Empire concluded its run in April, EP Danny Strong told THR that the show had an ending that they all loved and the hope was to eventually “give the series its proper conclusion.” Looks like now we may finally get some answers.
