An 'Arrow' Spinoff Is in The Works With The Canaries

With a few series wrapping up this season, The CW keeps rolling out plans for new shows. Arrow may be on its way out after eight seasons, but perhaps it isn’t the end of the road completely.

Oliver Queen’s daughter will be joining the action as part of a spinoff series starring The Canaries, and she won’t be the only one in the squad.

Who will star in the spinoff

Last season, fans were introduced to Green Arrow’s daughter,Mia Smoak, played by Katherine McNamara. As part of the 2040 future timeline—a conceptthat the Arrowverse is famous for—it seems like the character was destined to takeover the story in Star City. Someone has to and The CW has been dropping hintsabout the next generation of DC heroes for some time.

Mia will become the Green Arrow in the new show, and according to Variety, she’ll be joined by Dinah Drake (Juliana Harkavy) and Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy). Both Cassidy and Harkavy have been versions of Black Canary—and Black Siren—in various realities of CW’s DC Universe.

When season seven started doing its flash-forward sequences, it was revealed that the Canaries were their own special league in the 2040. With “Crisis on Infinite Earths” set to pull in most of the heroes from all Earths and timelines, expect things to line up nicely for them.  

The Canaries will get a backdoor episode

Per The Wrap, the Canary Network will make an appearance with a backdoor pilot during the upcoming season of Arrow. The series will be a shortened one with only 10 episodes, but one of them will be dedicated to the new spinoff.

 As it’s only a pilot, it is unclear whether The Canaries show will be ordered to full series. However, as Deadline points out, CW head Mark Pedowitz wants to expand the Arrowverse indefinitely:

“The fact that seven years ago, we introduced Arrow, who would have thought it would have spawned six shows, a whole universe that they managed to create. It’s quite a remarkable feat.

We believe these franchises, this universe will continue for many years, so it’s important to ensure that you have characters that will keep the fans coming back. How that universe plays out, time will tell.”

There’s lots of material to work with from the comics

Black Canary’s mythology in DC Comics is expansive, and thecharacter has history with Green Arrow, Batman, the Justice League, Birds ofPrey, and of course, Batwoman (Batgirl in the comics). Since The CW is known tosometimes deviate from the comics, fan may not see storylines or villains fromthe Green Arrow/Black Canary series as you know it.

But with the Arrowverse’s two Black Canaries, White Canary (Sara Lance), and Mia as Green Arrow, these fighters can wind up forging their own mythos within the DCEU. Once the “Crisis” epic plays out this year and the timeline is set, there’s no telling who will cross paths with the Canaries as an ally or a foe.
