Channel 4 viewers saw A Place in the Sun’s Laura Hamilton return to their screens on Wednesday afternoon, showing around Maggie and Gary, to find the perfect retirement home in the French countryside. They were looking for a property that could accommodate their large family with a budget of £150,000. However, Laura came up against Gary as his picky details were getting in the way.

Introducing the show, Laura said: “Today’s house hunters are married couple Gary and Maggie from Norfolk, they’re looking for a dream retirement bolthole for the two of them but with enough space to accommodate their large family with 13 grandchildren.

“We’ve rushed about all our lives for different things, our family, our hobbies, and it’s now time that we relaxed and enjoy another culture,” Gary explained.

“We’re still young enough and capable enough to enjoy France, we don’t want to wait until we’re old and on crutches,” Maggie added.

Laura showed the couple a converted barn house which she thought would be an ideal property for the pair as it offered a lot of space for their family.

“A short distance from the town and this is our next property,” Laura explained.

A little underwhelmed, Maggie said: “It’s…different,” with husband Gary agreeing, “Very different.”

Laura continued: “Well, you said you had 13 grandchildren and you needed a barn to accommodate them all.

“Well, this is a converted barn, the living accommodation is a little bit flexible as it’s listed as a four-bedroom property, but it could actually have five.”

This property was on the market for just under £144,000 and well within their budget.

After looking around the inside of the detached barn conversion, the couple spoke to Laura about what they thought of it and whether it was the one for them.

Both Gary and Maggie admitted they were “surprised” at what the barn had to offer, and Laura asked: “Has it exceeded your expectation though when you say surprised?”

“Yes, definitely, it’s made us think,” Maggie said. “When you look from outside, yes, it’s a barn conversion, but when you get inside, it’s a home,” Gary added.

Laura asked: “Where do we go from here, and is this a contender?” to which Gary replied: “I think it is, the only reserve I have got is the location is a little bit far for walking into the town.”

Shutting down Gary quickly, Laura replied: “Now you’re getting picky, Gary!”.

The third house the couple were shown was also a complete no, as Maggie felt the kitchen looked more like a “pantry not a kitchen”.

Gary also made a dig at Laura and asked her: “What are you thinking of Laura?!” after walking around the property and not feeling satisfied with what it had to offer.

However, the couple found one property that thoroughly impressed them both, which had a spacious kitchen, enough living space for their family to visit, half an acre of land as their garden, and was only a 25-minute walk from the nearest town.

Gary joked with Laura and said: “You have redeemed yourself wonderfully with this one, Laura,” with his wife agreeing: “This is exactly what we wanted!”

Unfortunately, the couple didn’t make an offer on any of the properties they had been shown, which left Laura feeling a little deflated.

Gary explained: “As it’s our final move, you’ve got to think, ‘What’s going to happen in the future?’ The garden I wouldn’t be able to maintain it as I get older.

“And that would be such a shame because the property lends itself to that garden. At the moment, we could cope with it.”

After hearing Gary’s reasoning, Laura asked: “Don’t tell me you’re not going to put an offer in on it?”

“The reason we are not because this is our final move, and we want it to be just right, you know? To be honest, that was spot-on as far as we were concerned,” Maggie told Laura.

“That the first one we’ve seen for real other than looking at various pictures, it’d be nice to say well this is what we want and look a just a few more.”
