A Place in the Sun host red-faced after showing property with ‘hated’ feature

A Place in the Sun presenter Ben Hillman was gutted after he was repeatedly criticised for showing guests around properties with features they didn't like.

The Channel 4 property expert was called upon to help Emma and Shane from Cornwall find their dream holiday home in Madeira on a budget of £200,000.

When he met up with the pair, they were looking for a three-bedroom property with a pool, open-plan living space with light decor.

They were ideally looking into properties in the San Martinho area but said they understood that it is an "expensive area" and they may have to make compromises to find a home.

However, one definite deal-breaker was on the list as Shane explained: "We're not really into the old-school, kind of dark wood everywhere, kind of really dark feeling."

But despite the previous warning Hillman still had properties lined up on the list covered in dark-coloured flooring everywhere – which left buyers and viewers baffled.

In the episode, which aired tonight, the pair were seen heading into their second property of the day when Ben said: "Oh God, no I've just noticed the dark floors."

Before walking off red-faced as he joked: "Come on let's go and look at the next house."

Shane immediately said "dark floors aren't my taste" but he said that the white walls made it better.

However, Emma said she liked the property despite what her partner said about it.

Fans were left baffled as they took to Twitter to share their opinions on the viewings.

One user sarcastically said: "Has he mentioned again how much he doesn't like dark floors?"

Another added: "Fabulous apartment it has everything – unfortunately it has beautiful dark wood floors, so it’s a no…"

A third wrote: "VERY Jels of these two. Madeira is a beaut. Although they’ve walked into a Madeiran house and said they don’t like dark wood floors so… good luck to them."

At the end of the show, the pair made an offer of £195,000 the final property, which was located on the beachfront.

Emma and Shane said they were willing to go £200,000 if the owners throw in the furniture — but the owners refused to accept less than £207,000 with the furniture.
