A Place in the Sun visited Costa Almeria in Spain for the most recent episode of the Channel 4 property show. Host Ben Hillman guided retirees Penny and Jon around the area in search of their dream holiday home. Armed with a maximum budget of £105,000, Ben arranged several property viewings for the couple. However, he was taken aback when Jon branded one property “soulless”.
Penny and Jon made it clear to Ben they were hoping to find a property with two bedrooms and two bathrooms.
They also highlighted having a modern holiday home with outside space and nice views was also a priority for them.
However, despite Ben fulfilling a number of their requests with the first property, Penny and Jon were left disappointed.
Property number one was a second floor apartment on the market for just under £103,500.
It boasted two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a communal pool and a sea view, but this wasn’t enough for Penny and Jon.
“It feels a little bit small and a little bit dark,” Penny remarked.
After looking around the whole apartment, Jon was brutally honest with property expert Ben.
“If I’m being honest Ben, no,” he remarked, before insisting: “It needs to be more modern.”
Shaking off the negative reaction, Ben swiftly moved on to property number two which was on the market for a much lower price at just under £95,000.
This holiday home featured two bedrooms, one toilet, one bathroom and a communal pool.
Jon and Penny noted it was more modern than the previous property, but still not the right fit for them.
When Ben asked if he was underwhelming the couple with the properties so far, Jon replied: “If I’m honest you’re not there.”
Ben was hoping for a better reaction to the third property which was priced at just under £94,000.
The apartment featured two bedrooms, two bathrooms, access to two communal pools and a communal tennis court.
Finally sharing a bit of positivity Jon confessed this property was a contender and a step in the right direction.
However, things went downhill once again when Ben took Penny and Jon to property number four.
On the market for just over £102,500 the property was a 10 minute walk from a local beach.
The holiday home included most of their requests as it had two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a terrace and a communal pool.
However, immediately after walking through the door, Jon made it clear he wasn’t impressed.
Penny laughed as Jon remarked: “I’m not liking it. I’m not feeling it at all if I’m honest.”
“It’s modern but dark isn’t it?” Penny commented, while looking at the small kitchen.
Jon replied: “It’s just soulless Penny. I want to come on holiday and feel like we’re coming to a second home.
“This is just soulless. It’s not homely is it?” he added.
After viewing the whole property the house hunters met back up with Ben and Jon revealed they were “disappointed”.
“You’re back in the bad books,” Jon exclaimed.
“I’m back in the bad books? Gosh it’s a rollercoaster ride,” Ben remarked.
“That just doesn’t feel like a second home to me. It’s soulless. No soul,” Jon revealed.
Clearly taken aback by the comments, Ben said: “I don’t think the pressure has ever been on quite like it is at the moment.”
A Place in the Sun airs weekdays at 3pm on Channel 4.
